THE MEETING LAST £ VENING,

Tue main object ot fluential meeting of Liberal Conservatives

held in the Atheneum last evening was to induce EVERY MAN in the Town, Com-

County Court Judge to-day for the purpose of having his”name registered upon the list of voters. The meeting was shortly addressed by Messrs. Brecken, Pope and ifaviland, It was agreed on all sides that the blundering legislation of last session would not have the effect of disfranchising any man of lawful age residing tn town— who could or would come forward to res quire his name registered, Therefore let every man in the town maintain and pre- serve his undoubted right to a voice in the Government of his country. Those who are unfortunate enough to be away from home will, we suppose, lose their votes. This cannot, for the present, be helped. Butitis an additional reason why every man who is home should secure the privis lege the absent ones will lose. The ques- tion raised by the County Court Judges as to the disfranchisement of the young men of the country was discussed. We were pleased to hear that the Hon. J. C. Pope agrees with THe EXAMINER, that every young man should claim and assert his right to the franchise. If the Judges de- cide that our bungling legislators have de« prived such a large and intelligent body us the young men of this country of the right of voting, then we must agitate—we rust force the Government to immediately call the Legislature together for the pur- pose of having the gross wrong righted, this is Mr. Pope’s advice ; and this is, we think, the proper course to pursue. Should McKenzie, as is suspected, spring an election upon the country before the young men of the country are invested with the right to vote,thore who do possess the right will, we feel sure, show their detes~ tation of the glaring trickeryand dis~ honesty—or stupidity—shown in this ins stance, by espousing the causefof the young men and defeating the base objects of those who wronged them. -. Pope and Brecken both alluded in terse language to the sophistries and falsehoods of the Premier while oa the Island, and hoth were heard with attention and -ap-

‘OUR FREE TRADE () PREMIER.

Wnuen the Premier was here, one of the grounds of bis uowarrantable attack upon the Taz Examiner was the heading piaced over a telegram announcing thet he had refused to try to obtain for our shipbuild- ers a free market in France, The heading complained of was as follows :—

A Free Trade Premier, who Will Not Aid an Effort to Obtain Free Trade in Ships!

Lt will be remembered that, while in Que- bec,on his way to this I sland,the Premier wae waited upon by a delegation of prominent merchants interested in shipbuilding. Late papers contain the form of the sug- gestions they prsented for the considera. tion of the Premier :—

“They suggested to Mr. Mackenzie the yropriety of some one specially interested being sent to London or V< rsailles, or both, in view of the speedy termination of the existing arrangement, and the probability of another convention being concluded be tween the two countries, and they thought it might be an inducement to the French Government to place Canadian ships in the same category, a» respects their tariff, as English ships, if we abolished or reduced the duty on French wines.”

The Premier (we quote his own words in Charlottetown) “refused to send sucha delegate to that Government, because we had no diplematic relations with any foreign country.”

Yet Mr, Mackenzie sent Gerge Brown— the hero of “Big Push’”?—to Washington on a wild goose chase; and Canada had no

diplomatic relations with the United

States :—

‘The Montreal Gazette properly remarks, ‘assuredly if thé will existed, the same means could be found of sending a delegate to Versailles. Surely the shipbuilding in- terest of Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New trunswick is of sufficient extent to secure for it the opening of the French market and of as much importance, as the admission free of our raw material into the United States. Thousands of the people of this Dominion are deeply interested in the thipbuilding, which is one of our greatest industries; and notwithstanding this, the J’remier will iend no aid to make it a source of employment.”

And were such a concession granted to them, On what ground could he refuse similar concessions to our various other in- dustrial interests, and the iron, woollen and cotten trades? He also pointed out that the shipping interest already was exceed- ingly lightly taxed on the materials which entered largely into the manufacture of ships, for instance, cordage and copper; especially when consideration was had to the expenditures entailed upon the gov- ernment on account of that interest in the shape of light.houses, harbors, life-saving apparatus, and steamers for service on the lakes and in the river and gulf.”

We shall not insuit the reader's intelli- gence by replying fo the argument that if this arrangement were made for shipping, other industries would have to be dealt with. To Mr. Mchenzie it seems a perfect horror that anything should be done to pro- mote any industry in Canada, But it is worth while referring to one statement, be- cause it is evidently calculated if not de- signed to mislead. The Premier seemed al- most to regret that some .expenditures had to be made for the benefit of the shipping in- terests of this country. He pointed out the expenditures entailed upon the government in the interests of the manufa ture ¢f ships, ‘in the shape of lighthouses, harbors, life saving &pparatus and steamers for service on the Jakes and in the river and Gulf.” Surely the Premier must have forgotton that he was addressing a body of merchants, when he talked such arrant nonsense, These expenses, Which, as we have said, he Seemed almost to regret, are not incurred in the in- terests of shipbuilding. If not a keel were laid in the Dominion, they would be equally necessary for the trade of the country, un- less, indeed, it is the design, as it certainly has been toa large extent, the effect of the policy of the Government to destroy that trade altogether, We think our readers will agree with us that the exhibition which the Premier made of himself before the mer- chants oi Quebe: was jitiable in the ex- treme. There is, however, one ray of light, and in justice to him jtought not to be om- mitted. He wag not allogether impervious to the argument. and he promised therefore that if the Board of Trade of Quebee would send a delegaie at their own cost to look af- ter this matter, the Canadian Government would give him a letter of introduction to the Colonial Secretary. WEST RIVER FEKRY.

We observe, with pleasure, that traffic on West River Ferry is increasing. In view of the fact that the Local Government have-—by neglecting to advertze the Southport—done their best to restrict travel by this route—the fact is extremely gratifying. Lord McAulay testities that England prospered in spite of the Stuarts ; and we are delighted to see that excurs sionists—attracled by the beauty of the scenery, the aftability of the officials of the boat, and sweet-scented, refreshing breezes wafted from either bank of the river—are swelling the receipts of the Southport in spite of the Local Government, Even the danger and “ inconveniency,”— we borrow the latter word from Adam Smith—of having to crawl or climb upon a plank down into and up out of the steamer, does not utterly appal searchers after pleas- ing recreation and fresh air. But the neglect of the Local Government to make a way for horses anil vehicles to get on board the Southport causes loss to the steamer, labor to the steamer’s hands, and trouble to the steamer’s pxssengers. Doubt- less this pleases the Local Government.

BATTLE.

The engagement on Sunday near Kurnk-~ dara lasted eight hours, The fight began with artillery along the whole line, when the Russians advanced on the” Turkish works under heavy fire, and dashed into and drove the Turks out of their intrench- ments. The Russians, however, did not attack the second line of intrenchments, from which the Turks kept up 4 constant fire, and after holding the outer intrench- ments, the Russians retired in the evening. The loss of the Russians was 304 killed and 76 wounded, including four officers. The lurks reported lost 1,500. The. attack was really to keep the attention of the lurks while a great strategetic movement was carried out in another directiou. ‘The Turkish Commander in Bulgaria, now that Mehemet Ali and Suleiman’s armies have formed a junction, intends to offer battle to the Russians. There will be ever 210, U00 men engaged.

B.) elevens came off, as advertised, at the Victoria Park yeste day, the 224 inst; and, after a very pleas at and agreeable game, resulted in the det: vt of the Charlottetown team by “rona "Chis result was anticipated by our cricketers, and in the victory of their gentlemanly opponents they see nothing to be ashamed of. But it will be, we are sure, a stimulus to renewed exertions on their part to continued practica and better training,—the only thing that can enable the cricket players of Charlottetown to cope successfully with a well organized and highly trained eleven from the Provinces, such as the Moncton in all respects appear to be. [here is no doubt that the material for a first-class eleven is to be found in the Charlottetown Club; but without practice vigorously prosecuted, the best men must succumb. The only double scores made by the Moncton team were in the first in- ning, secured by G. Ackman and B. Bovyer, who made 1] each; and in the second, Capt. Bovyer made 13. Of the Charlotte- town team, Capt. F.S. Longworth, after a carefully played inning, got 13, No other scores on this side were worthy of mention The fielding on both sides was very good; tut the Charlottetown eleven suffered by their lack of good change bowlers. Two women—Mrs. McLellan and Mrs. Nicholson—from Hartsville, Lot 350. met with a serious accident, while driving ina cart on Saturday last. The horse took fright and went ata galloping rate down a hill, causing the cart to break and precipi-~ tating the two women on the stony road, Mrs. McLellan had her head seriously hurt and Mrs. Nicholson was bruised severely. Through the skill of Dr, Henderson they will probably recover.

Pap Roaps IN THE CountRY. — The Pioneer’ says: “ Notwithstanding the new Road Act, we hear loud and continued complaints about the state of the roads in this vicinity and elsewhere, It may not be exercising too much forbearance, perhaps, to wait this year till the Act gets into reg- ular operation; but really at present there are hard things said about the state of the rosds. We trust those who hold the keys of the public chest will strengthen the hands of those having charge of this im- portant branch of the public service.”

Sea Sickness No More.—The London correspondent of the Liverpool Daily Post states that the homepathists have discoy- ered a certain remedy for sea sickness. It is apormorphia, and @ very small dose of it taken once an hour in water will remove the quilms. They are so certain of its success that they are going to procure a gratuitous circulation of it among vessels that carry passengers, It is also useful tor beasts, whose sufferings are often ex. treme.

The masons have been at work for some days, and have ad- vanced the walls to the height of five teet above ground. The work, so far, is both neat and substantial, and the building promises to be quite an addition to the village. The underground part of tne foundaticn js of stone; above this rises a ‘brick wall, ft. high, 18 inches thick, on which the sills are laid. This race was fiercely contested for a

while; and, for the-first mile and a half, Can't Help It” and ‘*Water Lily” were a tie. The other two lagged behind; but on the home stretch, ‘‘ Water Lily’? showed off, and came in about ten lengths ahead ot “Can't Help It,” making the 3 miles in 2m. 50 sec.—the other two along distance be- hind. For .th> Railway Race the ‘‘ Care Not’ and ‘No. 11” contested,—George Forrest stroke in the former and Wm. Mc- Gowan in the latter. The race was won by the **Care Not” by adout six lengths. The Punt Race, between P. Shea and C, Mc- Neill, was won by the former. Single Scull Railway Race.—Contested by P. Shea and Kelly, was a pretty tight one; but Shea was evidently the ablest oarsmen, and Kelly slacked off at the last,

Sir,--[ see by some of the other papers that intoxicating liquors were “ freely sold” at the refreshment saloon at the Caledonia Gathering. Can you give information as to who it was that issued the license for that purpose? 1 presume that one must have been specially issued for the occasion, as the holder of a license is only authorized to sellon his own premises. ‘The gather- ing having been in the Royalty, the license must hive issued outof the Provincial Secretary's office, as the city authorities have no jurisdiction there; and if they had, there is now no power anywhere in the city to issue new licenses. If issued from the Provincial Secretary’s office, was a meeting of the inhabitants of the School District previously called, as the law requires ? And if none of these things were done and no license at all was issued, can it be that illicit selling was going on openly and unpunished in open day in the face of all the constituted authorities ?

As such gatherings as these are common in the country, and as liquor selling at them is too common, and is always an uns mitigated nuisance, it would be well to know whether it goes in open defiance to the law or not.
