We do trust that the fire tever which has raged during the past week may be productive of more good than the mere inducement to open our hearts in sym~ pathy with the honseless and foodiess peo- ple of St. John. Phat the terrible calas whity whieh befel our sister city brought ont such am earnest and practical express sion of good-fellowship and humanity, is certainly matter for felicitation. But it ought to do much mor® than this. It should make us active and vigilant. Char- iotectown, Summerside, Souris, George- town, and Alberton, each should take practical systematic measures to protect themselves from the attack—which may be made at any momeut—of the fell de-

is, of course, a matter of great impors tance, But time is required. Mean- while. the most should be made of the water we have. Tue examination of the pupils attending this fine institution took place in the Study Hali, yesterday, at 2 o'clock. It was at- tended by a large number of clergymen, a great mauy friends of the institution,and a number of the pupils’ parents. The stu- dents were examined in the various branches by the Rev. Dr. McDonald, the Rev. Angus McDonald and Prof. Caven. It is needless to say they showed great pro. ficiency. ‘Co mention the classes in detail we do not think necessary, for all the pupils acquitted themselves in a very creditable manner. All the branches which are neces- sary to fita man for any pursuit in life are systematically taught in this institution. It has, for a number of years, been sending young men forth into the world, who are not only a credit to their parents and rela- tives, but to the [sland in general. Ne doubt ia the future, as in the past, the managers wil! continue the same persever ing energy.
When the examination of the different branches was brought to a close, the Rev. Dr. McDonald distributed a large number ot prizes to the most successful students, He then addressed the pupils on Ahe subject of their past and future studies. The Rev. Angus McDonald tollowed witba few cheer- ing and courteous remarks. A_beautifal trio was sung by Rev. Allan McDonald, Prof, Caven, and M aster James Corcoran, which brought the examination to a ¢ ose. The list of prizes will be found on our first

On Saturday evening a meeting was held at Montgomery's Hall, for the purpose of ascertaining what amount of money could be realized in this town for the unfortunate people of St. John who were made suffer- ers by the late terrible conflagration in that city. The Chairman of the Town Wardens occupied the chair,and W, A. Brennan was appointed Secretary. men spoke, among whom were Stephen MeNeill, Agent of the Merchants’ Bank of Halifax; I. L. Steves, Hon, John Lefurgey,
The two first named gentlemen were eyes witnesses of the awful calamity.
Ihe following resolution was moved by Thomas Kelly, seconded by D. Rogers, and passed unanimously :—
—
“« Whereas, The people of Summerside have learned that the greater portion of the city of St. John has been laid in ashes and many valuable lives sacriticed in the awful conflagration which has devastated that city, and deeply deploring the suffering and ruin occasioned thereby, this meeting hereby extends its sympathy and condol- ence with the numerous victims of that terrible calamity."’
It was then moved, seconded and passed, that a subscription list be opened immedi- ately, and also that a committee of thirteen be appointed for the purpose of canvassing the town for said subscriptions.
The committee appointed is composed of the following gentlemen :—

Besides the above amounts, there was subscribed in small sums enough to make a total of about $1.300. Weare unable to give the names of all who so generously contributed, owing to the fact that the subscription lists were not available at the time of writing.
The fire in St. John has cast a gloom over the whole community. Here and there along Water Street small groups of people can be seen, talking over the fearful acci- dents, the infernal fiendish incendaries, and all the incidents generally that are connected with a fire such as the city of St. John has lately had the misfortune to experience. The heart of every man in this town has been touched.
