PUBLIC INEMIIS

Ragweed and Ragwort, two weeds which are similar in name only. are causing an increasing amount of damage throughout the province. There are other weeds which cause farmers more trouble in fields, but they are recognized by everyone and do not go unnoticed.

Ragweed is recognised by very few people, mainly because it does not have any snowy blossoms. It is generally found along roadsideii and in waste areas. Its most no- ttceable feature is the several green spikes of male flowers about three inches long at the top of the plant. Common ragweed grows from one to two feet tall, while a great ragweed may reach six feet in height. The chief damage done by ragweed is. of course, the die- comfort caused to people who suf- fer from hay fever. However, if neglected, it will spread into cul- tivated fields and become a serious post. to farmers. At present its occurrence is confined to road- sldee, several farm yards. and va- rant lots throughout the province. A likely source of seed is in im- ported grains. It is easily control- led by spraying in July with 2, 4-D.

Rsgwort, also called stinking willie or St. John's Wort. is much more common than ragweed and is more easll recognized. it is a biennial which produces a rosettc of dark-green wrinkled leaves in the first year, but in the second .lca.i' shoots up to about two feet high with rich-yellow flowers at the top. It is found in pastures. hayflelds, waste places and road- .-ides. The chief damage caused by ragwort is the crowding out of hay and pasture plants. Occasionally, it is eaten by cattle and horses, which results in the death of the animals. There have been reports just recently of cattle dying of ragwort poisoning. The eastern and western ends of the province are fairly well polluted with this unsightly weed. Scattered patches also occur in the central parts, which could easily be eradicated before spreading beyond control.

Control of ragwort is sometimes riiiiiult. The oldest remedy is to heavily grass the infestcd area with sheep. This type of livestock Ln not injured by eating the weed. Keeping the weed mown is an end- less job, but will prevent seed pro- duction. A method which holds iimmise is spraying the rosettes in June and again in September with a fairly heavy application of 2, I- D. "Ilhie mould kill the plants which produce the seeds the following year. but will do little harm to the old plants, which should be cut and destroyed before spraying.

In Ontario, and also in some Westcrn provinces, weeds of this two have become such a. problem that weed control acts have been based which make it compulsory

for isnd-owners to prevent these noxious weeds from going to seed. These laws alsoapply to rail- roads, highways. Public utilities, etc.. so that all areas capable of producing weeds are either mown, sprayed, or cultivated. It is to be hoped that such laws will never be- come nece 1 in P. E. I., but if the present neglect of weeds by all concerned continues, we will soon find oureelvves in the same position. '

PREPARING FOR WINTER. YEUIT TREE!

Each year thousands of fruit trees of all kinds are injured in Canada by mice which except for the summer months, are a con- stcnt threat to growers. They may feed on the bark any time between September and May. the greatest injury usually occurring in Novem- ber and again in March. This year several trees already have been girdled by mice and control mea- sures should therefore be put into operation immediately.

The destruction by mice varies from one year to another depend- ing upon the population of mice. the supply of food available and the character of the winter. The injury, however. is always greater when the orchard is in and or when there is considerable rubbish

lying about. Therefore, removing rubbish and keeping the young orchard under clean cultivation

will, help greatly in reducing the population of mice. However, if the trees are growing in a perman- ent sod, removal of the sod for a width of 11A feet around the trunk before late September is often quits effective. It is best, then, to fill the trench caused by the re- moval of the son with coarse sand, einders, or crushed stone as this will prevent the grass from grow- ing up again and will act as a. permanent protector.

In addition to the above pre- cautions the best form of protec- tion for young trees is wire tree guards which can be made from quarter-inch mesh galvanized about in inches wide from is to 21 inches high. The bottom of the guards should be inserted into the ground to a depth of 2 to 3 inches to pre- vent the mlcc tunnelling under it. If this is not easy to do, then soil can be heaped around the base of the guard to a depth of about 3 inches. Those guards can be left on throughout the entire year and if checked each fall should protsct a tree for 'i or 8 years and then removed to younger trees.

Light building paper wrapped firmly around the trunk and tied with twine also gives good protec- tion but this must be removed each spring and replaced in the fall. Tar paper and roofing paper is not satisfactory as the bark be- neath is often injured.

Although it is not generally re- commended by officials one of the larger fruit producers in our prov- ince has had good success in mice control by mounding the base of the trunk with soil to a. height of about one foot. The main advan- tages of this method are that it is cheap and is permanent.

If mice become a severe problem poison bait may be used as a con- trol but this is not recommended for small producers.

ITRAWBEBRIES

strawberry plants are quite of- ten injured by extreme cold in winter and in early spring caused by alternate freezing and thawing. crown injury may also result early in the season from severe freezing before snow cover or from the drying action of winter winds. To counteract these effects of adverse weather conditions it has ” practice to apply a winter mulch which becomes a substitute for snow oover when t.he latter is scarce and also tends to hold the snow when it does come.

several materials including straw, strawy manure, old nay. marsh hay, shavings and sawdust have been used successfully as mulch but straw is probably the favorite. The quantity of mulch applied should be about three inches or 2 to Sir tons per acre.

At one time it was recotrunended that mulch be tpplied in early winter as soon as the ground was frozen hard enough to support I loaded wagon. More recently, how- ever, it has been found that in- jury may occur considerably eeri- ier and earlier protection is now recommended. The proper time is after the plants have become dor- mant, preferably after the first severe frost but before the temper- ature falls as low as 20" I". which is liable to cause crown injury.

The mulch should be allowed to remain on until the frosty weather of early spring is over or until new leaves begin to appear on the plants. If left too late injury to the plsnts may result but the main objection to leaving it on too long is that blossoming and fmit ripen- ning may be delayed.

The mulching material may be removed completely except for leaving some immediately around the plant or it may be left between the rows where it will discourage weed growth. hold moisture and help to keep the ripe fruit clean. The latter method is usually pre- ferred. '

The object of the contest was to name the new "Wlld Bill I-Ilckox" television pro- gram. The name supplied by Marilyn was "Murder at Hoot Owl Pass", for which she won a lovely clock-radio. First prize in this con- test was s trip to Hollywood and a television set.

RETURNS" FROM MISSION. - Rev. II. F. Maclltwen returned rec- ently from Nova Scotia. During the month of September he preached at Westminster Church, Sydney. From neptember illst to 26th he con- ducted an Evangelistic Campaign there. I was a little early for my fit- ting appointment and Miss Evans, the dressmaker was busy with an-

"My", I said to Miss Evans when the customer had departed, "you certainly have patience. I haven't the patience to sew on a button."

"But I bet you spend hours writing one of your pieces," she smiled. "and any kind of writing gives me the jitters. I get nervous when I have to writs a thank- you notc. "I guess it depends on what you enjoy doing."

strange that we are surprised when other people and ourselves too, turn out to he a sort of patch- work instead of all of a piece. Yet this is borne out by every-day ob- servation and experience.

Patience. of oourse,, like many human traits, is closely tied up with interest, which is more or less based on ability. But un- doubtsdiy much can be done to help its spread to other areas. I can say from my own experience that patience in sewing was never held up to me as a virtue, while

patience along other lines was taught me by word and example, and practice.

Experiments, for instance have been made of neatness, in children. The children were helped to realise that neatness for them had definite advantages. A general improvement in the qual- ity of all of the work of the chil- dren was noted. It was concluded that a particular trait does not

transfer automatically. but an ideal can be built up. 0 O 0

The troublesome part of the

building of ideals and attitudes is that they must be reinforced con- stantly to meet new conditions. The child can be carefully brought up in his home to be honest, but when he gets old enough to reit- son things out for himself, and sees how many people he used to admire, are not always honest. he begins to set himself a modified ideal of honesty.

HOWEVEI3 early influences srel very strong, and if the virtues we - truly wish our children to have, are not only preached but prac- ticed in the home and the school, they will in most cases be a strong protective shield in the years to come.
