A single sentence, in asbort ed.torial in the Daily Patriot, contains the essence of the doctor’s position, if trae,—and my for objecting, if falee. Now scientific tacts are statements of well established koowledge, teaching problems in Euclid the teacuings of th geologist, chemist, or the astronomer. Theories not fortitied by faci#in every link of needed evidence, are never treated as ecieuce. As an example the disciples of phrenology have looug sought to have their theories recognized as science; bus the claim has eteadily been denied by the learned world.

D B. n the Patriot, quotes from the American Medical Assogiation Journal, the very weak and non-ecieatific statement “it 18 generally believed.” Let the doctor takea case to court and try what the jadge will say to him if he bas no sirouger evidence to effer than “it is generaily believed.” W. en closely examined, every one of the accueations against the cowand her milk are mere guetsee, with no substantia! scientific well-estatlished evidence. Even the medical! profession are at variance.

He Wanted te Show His Contempt for Human Life.

Paris, March 2.—News of a strange crime comes from Nancy. A _ wealthy merchant of the name of Mathias received some days ago an anovy.,0us letter demand- ing thesum of 50,000 francs, on the pain of death. The writer eaid that in order to show the genuin: s<ness of his threat, and how little he cared for human life, he would ki]! a man at nightfall oo a certain street in Nancy three days later.

Mathias was not muci disturbed over the matter, b-lieving it to be a j>ke or ap empty threat. On the morning after the day named, however, he rec-ived another note eayi ¢:
