—The St. John Sun’s Ottawa correspon- dent remarks that “‘ the franchise discus- sion brought out some disagreement as to facts between Mr. Davies and Mr. Martin of Prince Edward Island. Though Mr. Davies has become a minister he has not yet abandoned bis somewhat wild and reckless habit of dealing with questions of fact. Mr Martin was able to correct him on various details round which Mr. Davies had arrayed come of his arguments.

THF NEW TARIFF IN MONTREAL.

A despatch from Montreal reports that when the tariff bill was read by the Mon- treal merchants the Couservatives ap- peared better satisfied thaa the Liberals, the free trade section of the Jatter being completely in the dumps. The cotton people were more than pleased until the ggllec’ar of gustoms received an intima tion from Ottawa that the reduction on British goods would go into iminediate

effect, and than the * 16 of the cotton

The sugar refiners have no doubt been badly dealt with, and the reduction of the duty on the refined article from 64 to 50 will render competition with the German bounty fed sugars almost impossible. FISHING NOTES.

Capt. W. H. Jacksoz, the Boston artist is one of the most devoted anglers that it has ever been my good fortune to meet. He finds his chief relaxation from the duties of his profession ip the pleasures of the gentle sport and his description of the

laces he has visited and tke fishing he bad are always vivid and interesting. The months of July, August and Septem~ ber he generally passes on sume of the best fishing waters of Maine or the Can- adian provinces, and last year he crossed the Atiantic to cast his fly in the lochs and streams of Scotland. He has since told me that American waters are good enough for him, and bereafter he will confiae his fish- ing to the waters of his native land and the adjacent British provinces. Prince Edwarc’s Island was eelected as his place of sojourn this year, and he reached home about one week ago from atrip to that angler’s paradise which lasted three months. The Captain fishes only with the fly, and in the neighborhoodof the little

town of Souris he found ideal trout fishing every day of his stay that he felt disposed to go out after it. The

fishes are whatis known as sea trout, delicious in flavor and exceedingly gamy, Streams having their origin in springs of ice-cold water flow into ponds which make in from the sea, so that the brook fisher- may or he who prefers casting his fly from the boat can each indulge his liking. Big Pond, Morson’s Pond, North Lake, Bleck Pond, East Lake and Fortune River—the latter a noted stream for trout in the spring—are the names of the best waters. The Captain’s score for the entire trip was seventeen hundred and ninety-five trout, and on the last day of fishing, in September, he made a new record by land- ing two hundied and fifty-two fishes wigh- ing collectively one hundred and fifty pounds. Several of this catch scaled two and one-half pound. His most taking flies were the Parmachenee Belle and a fly with a speckied gray wing and red body, and whenever these were attached to his leader the fishing was fast anJ furious.

Boston Witt Cevesrate.—The Sun’s Boston correspondent writes: The local committee in charge of the arrangeme.ts for celebrating the Queen’s diamond jubilee is making good progress, and the celebration in Mechanic’s hall, June 21, will be an imposing eveat. A big banquet will be held. An effort will be made to have Sir Charles Tupper come and deliver the oration,

Of a highly nervous temperament, the engineer, while he felt himself guiltless of murder, was yet so overcome with the knowledge that he had taken two lives that he was wholly unbalanced, and prob- ably in the most mechanical way, with his hand on the lever, sent his train along the tracks, completely oblivious of the dan- ger that threatened him. The piteous ap- peal to his fellows, asking them if he real. ly was to blame, is one of the most pitiful incidents in the affair. Experts say that an engineer can only pass through a giver amount of strain, and that once having passed this point he is scarcely accountable for what he may do.

There is a great difference in people, however, as to the effect which such ca- lamiities have upon them, People of stolid and unimpressible temperaments may pass through such experiences and be but slightly overcome by them, but it is a dan- yerous thing for the sensitive, highly or- ganized mind to be placed in such an aw- ful position.—New York Ledger.
