Then Wardlaw, who had feigned in- souciance so admirably in that part of his interview with Condell, went, without losing an hour, and raised a large sum of money lon the insured freight, to meet the bills \that were coming due for the gold (for he had paid for most of it in paper at short dates) and also other bills that were ap- proaching maturity.

This done, he breathed again, safe for a month or two from everything short of a general panic, and full of hope from hi# coming master-stroke. But two months soon pass when a man has a flock of kites in the air. Pass? “They fly. So now he iooked out anxiously for his Australian ships, and went to Lloyd’s every day to hear ifeither had been seen or heard of by steamers or by faster sailing vesse’s than themselves.

And, though Condeli had underwritten the ‘Proserpine’ to the tune of eight thou- sand pounds, yet still his mysterious words rang strangely in the merchant's ears and made him so uneasy that he employed a discreet person to sound Cundell as to what he meant by ‘double the insurance of the ‘Shannon.’’

It turned out to be the simplest affair in the world; Condeil had secret information that the ‘Shannon’ was in bad repair, so he had advised his friend to insure her heav- ily. For the same reason he Ceclined to underwrite her freight himself.

With respect to those ships, our readers already know two things, of which Ward- law himself, nota bene, had no idea,namely, thet the ‘Shannon’ had sailed last, instead of first, and that Miss Rolleston was not on board of her, but in the ‘Proserpine,’ two thousand miles ahead.

To that, your superior knowledge, we posters of the sea and land, are about to make a large addition, and relate things strange, but true. While that anxious and plotting merchant strains his eyes seaward, trying hard to read the future, we carry you, in the moment of time, across the Pacific, and board the leading vessel, the good ship ‘*Proserpine,” homeward bound.

The ship left Sydney with a fair wind, but soon encountered adverse weather, and made slow progress, being close hauled, which was her worst point of sailing. She itched a good deal, and that had a very ill effect on Miss Rolleston. She was not sea-sick, but thoroughly out of sorts; and in one week became perceptibly paler and thinner than when she started.

The young clergyman, Mr. Hazel, watch- ed her with respectful anxiety, and this did not escape her feminine observation: She

but withdrew their geze when she looked at him. Clearly, he was interested in her, but had no desire to intrede upon her attention.

Engaged young ladies are, for various reasons, more’ sociable with the other sex than those who are still on the universal mock-defensive; a ship, like a distant coun- try, thaws upon English reserve, and women, in general, are disposed to admit privileges. No wonder, then, that Miss Rolleston, after a few days, met Mr. Hazel half-way; and they made acquaintance on board the ‘Proserpine,’ in monosyllables at first; but, the ice once fairly broken, the intercourse of mind became rather rapid.

At first it was a mere intellectual ex- change, but one very agreeable to Miss Rolleston; for a fine memory, and omniver- ous reading from his very boyhood, with the habit of taking notes, and reviewing them, had made Mr. Hazel a walking dic- tionary, and a walking essayist if required. But when it came to something which most of all the young lady had hoped from this temporary acquaintance, viz., religious instruction, she found him indeed as learned on that as on other topics, but cold and devoid of unction, so much so that one day she said to hin :

‘I can hardly believe you have ever been a missionary.’ But at that he seemed so distressed that she was sorry for him, and said, sweetly: ‘Excuse me, Mr. Hazel ; my remark was in rather bad taste, I fear.’ ‘Not at all,’ said he. ‘Of course I am unfit for missionary work, or 1 should not be here.’

Miss Rolleston took a good look at him, but said nothing. However, his reply and jher perusal of his countenance satistied her thay he was a man with very little petty vanity and petty irritability. :

One day they were discoursing of grati- tude; and Mr. Hazel said he had a poor opinion of those persons who speak of ‘the burden of gratitude,’ and make a fuss about being ‘laid under an obligation.’

‘As for me,’ said he, ‘I have owed such a debt, and have found the sense of it very sweet.’

‘But perhaps you were always hoping to make a return,’ said Helen.

‘That | was—hoping against hope.’

‘Do you think people are grateful in general (’

‘Well, I think they are. To me, at least. Why, I have experienced gratitude even in a convict. It was a poor man who had been transported for something or other, and he bagged papa to take him for his gardener. Papa did, and he was so grate-

| watched in the gardea night after sight; ‘and what do youthink? The honse was attacked by a whole gang; but poor Seaton coufronted them, and shot one, and was wounded cruelly; but he beat them off for us. And was not that gratitude ?

While she was speaking so earnestly, Mr. Hezel’s bivod seemed to ran throngh his veins like heavenly fire; but he taid nothing, and the lady resumed with gentle fervor:

‘Well, we got him a clerk’s place in a shipping-oflice, and heard no more of him; but he did rot forget us. My cabin here was fitted up with every comfort and every delicacy. 1 thanked papa for it, but he locked so blank I saw directly he knew nothing about it, and now I think of it, it

Bettvieu Company's Ovtioox.—The diamond drill at the depth of 650 feet passed into oil shale, and soon oil in con- eiderable quantities came up with the water used in working the drill, and has con- tinued to flow to a more or less extent to the present time. Since striking the oi) the drill has passed through 100 feet of this oil shale, and now at the depth of 750 feet, where they are operating, this shale has become very soft, and a larger flow of oil came up than at any one time before. Some of this oil shale is so thoroughly im- pregnated with oil that, after being brought up and exposed to atmospheric action, quite large globuies of pure oil ooze out on ite surface. This shale, when placed in a hot tire, burns with the same clear, bright flame, without any smoke, as Albertite, but leaves amuch larger residuum. The oil is pro- nounced by those who have had experience in such things as being as much superior to the common oil, found in other regions, as Albertite, its undoubted neighbor, is to common coal. Here these both tangible and ocular evidences prove the existence of a deposit which, if properly manipulated by the company, must produce a large and profitable return. A very sad suicide is recorded in the Lon- don papers. Mahomet Ismael Khan, an Afghan of good family, left his native land to study medicine in England. He acquired the coveted hovors, he was studious and in- dustrious, but his ekin was dark and every avenue was closed against him. He wrote a calm letter arguing in favor of the right to commit suicide, recounted the story of his disappointment, and swallowed a large dose of prussic acid. This suicide proves that a color line is drawn even in England, the freest country under the sun, and it parallels the tragedy of the poet Chatterton who sacrificed his life to pride. If this

A true story reaches us. We arg con- vinced of its truthfulness, first because it

This rural scientist has succeeded in producing beer from a milch cow by feeding her with hops, malt, and corn. This is characterized by such extreme simplicity thet the only wonder is that other scientific farmers had not’ previously hit upon the plan, the in- ventor of which deserves to go down to posterity side by side with the man who made his hens lay ready boiled eggs by feeding them on hot water. We are curious to know how this newly developed cow will rank under the liquor law.

Lafayette Cook, an eccentric citizen of Auburn, Me., two weeks ago predicted he would die November 11. On Sunday mornivg he remarked he would never eat another breakfast with his family. He ap- peared to be in usually good health and went for a walkin the afternoon. Return- ing he said he would prepare himself for his coffin, which he did. He then bade his relatives good-bye, laid down on a lounge, soon fell asleep and sank into a stupor, from which he could not be aroused. Physicians were summoned but the man died on Monday morning. A post-mortem disclosed no evidence of poison.

Sir Charles Tupper returned from Paris on Saturday, 10th inst., the Submarine Cables Conference, which he was attending, having terminated its labors on the previ- ous Jay. As the representative of Canada, the High Commissioner signed the protocol which was adopted, recommending to the governments the draft convention as re- vised, to meet objections and wishes on legal and tenical details. This event has more than ordinary interest, for, as many of our readers are aware, the occasion is the first in which Canada has taken part in an international conference as practically a separate power, acting and voting indepen- dently of Great Britain.

The number and tonnage of British ves- sels, respectively, whose loss reports were received at the Board of Trade during Sep- tember, 1883, and number of lives lost were as follows:—51 sailing vessels of 10,902 tons, with 83 hives lost; 14 steamers 6,577 tons, with four lives lost.
