The annual dinner given by the Cale- denian Ciub incelebration of St. Andrew’s Day, was exceedingly pleasant and suc-

cessful,—fully up to the standard of former years. Among those who were unavoidably and regrettably were His Honor the Lieutenant Gcveroor,the United States Consul, Lieut-Colonel knving, Mr. A. C. McDonald, M. P., Alexander Martip, M. P., Hon. D. Gordon,and Major Weeks. But a goodly company sat down to the festive board. The president of the Club Mr. James Mclsaac, Editor of the Herald, presided, with the Chief, Mr. T. A. Mes Lean, at his, right, and the Vice President, Mr.. Robert Campbell, acted as croupier.

The dinner was a good one, well served, and it reflected great credit upon the Hotel Davies, the haggis bsing remark- ably good. We quote the menu:

Loxpox, November 29.—It developed to-dey, from the investigation made iato the subject, that the eight barges loaded with cases of gun-powder falsely labelled “arms,” which had been seized by cust ms officers on the Thames, were consigned from St. Petersburg to Jubutil, through a Paris agent, and were probably intended for Abyssinia.
