Letter to the Editor - Fifty Years of What?

On December 1 0th, 1998 the Canadian government formally celebrated the 50" anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and glorified Canada’s role in the development of this document. On November 25th, 1997, thousands gathered to exercise their democratic rights. During the protests, students were arrested for being protest organizers, “saying foolish things,” and holding signs, walkie-talkies or mega hones. Students involved in peaceful civil-disobedience (such as sitting on the street) were pepper-sprayed rather than being arrested. Television footage showed a CBC video-camera and obediently eee being drenched in pepper- spray. Many of the women arrested were strip- searched and some had “cavity searches”. One person was bitten by a police dog, and others had guns pointed at them.

Happy New Year!! My name is Erin Fagan and | am the 1998/1999 UPEI rep forthe NGR and Campus Worklink. Essentially, | am working to assist students and graduates in their job search using two invaluable and efficient Internet services.

The NGR (the National Graduate Register) is an Internet service allowing Canadian students to post a standardized resume on-line. From there, they can apply toa wide range of job postings, research career information, and find links to other employment resources on-line. In addition, employers across Canada can search the database and have their needs matched with the skills and education of job-seekers. Last year, nearly 21,000 employers requested searches on the database. The site can be found at ngr.schoolnet.ca.

Campus Worklink is a related Canadian resource working in partnership with 86 schools across Canada, including UPEL. oyers advertise job openings on this website, and target their recruitment towards sel schools. Students can then search the postings for UPEI and apply directly to positions. The site is at www.campusworklink.com .
