A CORRESPONDENT writes :-—

“ Will you kindly call “attention to the desirability of cuiiting down the thistles and other weeds now growing to seed, by the — of our streets in the outskirts of thecity. We

ae generally cut down one side a block every yeer ourselves, and the thistles are getting beautifully left. One of the city men em ployed a day, or perhaps two, would about do the work. I believe there is a law in regard to this matter in the country, making it the duty of each land occupier to cut down noxi- ous weeds on the roads adjoining his land.

mended who sets before himself a high and brilliant ideal, and seeks to reach it. It is pleasing to know that there is at least one youth in our midst who desires to be com- pared with one of Britain’s greatest men. But it is, on the other hand, that journalism—which does not affurd scope snd vent for such a youth. The conditions surrounding even a morning newspaper, must of necessity hamper the fancy and impede the progress of one in search of personal fame. We have no doubt that it was the uninspiring flatness of all things journalistic which caused the ambitious young journalist—who says ‘‘ we

are not such stuff as dreams are made of ”—to steal an idea from Edmund Burke. The Guardian says :—

“Verily the age of chivalry is gone and that of politicians has succeeded. Well might we have expected that a thousand pens would rush tothe ink bottle to avenge one word which threatened the women of the W. C. T.U. with insult.’’

And Burke said :—

**I thought ten thousand swords would have leaped from their scabbards to avenge even a look that threatened her with insult. But the age of chivalry is gone. That of sophisters, economists and calculators has succeeded,”

The works of Edmund Burke are splen- did in diction and full of wisdom. But his style is rather ornate for the common uses of the daily news- paper. It must be confessed that we pre- fer, as models of style for journalistic effect, the works of Sydney Smith. The works of Goldwin Smith, too, and Lord Macaulay are worthy the closest study of those who, likeovr youthful journalistic Pitt, desire to become masters of literary form, Yet Burke may be read with great advan- tage. We regret that evidence cannot be found in the Guardian’s clumsy paraphrase of one of Burke's finest passages, that our young aspirant has been a worthy pupil of the great master, or that he has yet learned to make yood use of other men’s ideas. Nor can we believe that the ladies, parti- cularly the young ladies, of the W. C. T. U. will appreciate highly the self-imposed service rendered by their false knight. The ass in a lion’s skin is an object of pity rather than of admiration and of love.

I wonder if Mr. Wiman ever travelled through Canada 25 years ago, before Sir John built his trade barrier, or if he knew anything of the provinces before their con- federation as the Dominion? Then every petty province had a tariff system of its own and was practically enjoyiug the blessing of Mr. Wiman’s trade policy. After the con- federation of the provinces into the Dominion, of which scheme Sir John was the father, he did build a trade barrier between Canada and the United States, that is, he secured for Canada a protective tariff, and under that 20 years protective tariff Canada has im- proved more than she did in the 100 years before,

Mr. Wiman talks about the trade barrier emigrating peopie from Canada. Before the protective system there was scarcely a factory in the whole country, and there was nothing else for the young men and women to do but emigrate. What few remained at home did little else than raise children for the United States market. When a boy was born there the water for his first bath was taken from a well with a Yankee pump, the well itself was dug with a Yankee shovel and pick. The water was carried in a Yankee bucket, boiled on a Yankee stove with a Yankee kettle, while the youngster’s whole trousseau was of Fnglish manufacture, his diapers not except- ed. He was literally a yonng man without a | country, half Yankee, half English. Canada | was simply a place for him to be born and | grow up in.

About the farm everything that was used was manufactured in the United States— plows, harrows, rakes, forks, shovels, spades, axes, etc. In the house the furniture, stoves, etc., came from the United States, while the carpets, blankets, linen, cotton, all came from England Since Sir Jchn’s_ protective tariff (Mr. Winan’s trade barrier) every town and village has its factories. They no longer send to Lynn for their shoes orto New Eug- land for their stoves. JLhousands of young men find emp'oyment at home in the manu- facture of the articles they formerly im- ported. If the Canadians have no better sense than to listen to Mr, Wiman’s advice to pull down Sir John’s trade barrier, the United States and England would close every factory in Canada inside of two years, and their young, thriving manufacturing towns would be deserted. There are, however, a tew articles the exchanges of which between the United States and Canada under a wise reciprocity treaty would be of advantage to both countries.

The Rev. A. MecAulay, of the Palaca, leaves this afternoon for a few weeks vacation in the country. Considering the work which the rev. gentleman has done during the past year in this parish, his many friends will wish him a happy vaca- tion amidst the pleasing country sports of rod and gun, and hope that he may return with renewed strength and vigor to resume his official duties.

Canadian side, extradition proceedings were begun.

A despatch from Crete says the house of a Turkish family in the village of Caramos was recently attacked, and two men, & woman and a child were murdered. Eighteen Christian subjects were arrested for the crime and were imprisoned with Turkish convicts. While in the prison they were stabbed with knives and so seriously injured that they lay for eight days in a dangerous condition.

A conference of French Jewish associations was held at Paris on the 3rd, at which the plans of Bacon Hirsch for the ameloration of the condition of destitute Hebrews was dis« cussed. The conference approved of the plan of the baron aiming at co-operation of the Jews in Europe and America in the work of organizing the emigration of Jews from Russia. It was decided to again send dele. gates to Russia for the purpose of vonstituting # central committee in St, Petersburg and ot establishing a provincial committee charged with regulating the exodus,
