ALL QUIET AT PULLMAN,
A late Chicago despatch states that Mayor Hopkins has wire Governor Alt- geld asking him to reca}l cight companies of the First Regiment, I. N..G. This order removes three of the six compantes now at Pullman, and leave: but one com- pany on the Illincis Central tracks, that at Hammond. The mayor said that he felt satisfied that the three companies left at Pullman conld mainian order. The second regiment, stationed at the steck yards, will be left there for the present, and the mayor refused to say when the remaining companies at Pullman will be withdrawn. This action on the part of the mayor was the result of a conference being held between Vice-president Wickes of the Pullman Co. and Adjutant-General Orendorff of the I. N.G. Vice-president Wickes did not anticipate trouble, stating that the company was making no effort to secure new men, and that he expected the employes to eventually go back to work.
—The Boston Post, ina recent editor- ial, remarks :—* The situation at present, indeed, is without precedent of recent years. Immigration has fallen off greatly within the past year and is now at a very low ebb, while emigration has increased at a pace heretofore unknown, and now amounts almost to an exodus. The Ceph- alonia will probably take out 2,000 from Boston on her next trip; while as for New York, where the greater number ar- rive and leave, the last month for which statistics are obtainable shows about 20,- 000 leaving that port to about 15,000 arrivals. ’

General Lord Wolseley 'eing prevented by the fact of his n wing royal blood in his veins ivom bevoming Commander- in-Chief of the British Army, the Queen, who loves him, was resolved at ieast to make him Field Marshal by way of a birthday gift. I have always fancied thai, having had so much trouble with most of her Irish subjects, the Queen had a specially weak spot in her heart for Wolse- ley because he was an Irishman and so valiant a Royalist. His Irish nature sticks out in hia love of adventure and in his wonderful luck of getting out of perilous scrapes. He entered his profession 42 years ago as a lad of 18, with the rank of ensign. He was rapidly promoted in the field. During his first campaign in Burmah he and a brother officer were shot down at the head of a storming party. His com- panion bled to death in afew minutes, and Wolseley’s life waa saved almost miracu. lously after months of extreme suffering. In the Crimea, when he was but 21, he was reveral times wounded. In the trenches before Sebastopol he was knocked down by a solid shot striking near him, and ren- dered senseless, while those above him were instantly killed. He was picked up for dead with ho‘es in all parts of his body. The surgeons abandoned hope, but he did not, and to his detsrmination and fortitude he owed his final recovery with only the loss ot an eye.
That lost eye made him a Captain. He was the youngest man in the army to re- ceive such a commission, and the musty- fusty War Office, afier a feeble effort to cancel the promotion, felt sure something very dreadful would come of it. Nor was the War Office mistaken. In the first few months of his new authority Captain Wol- seley abolished the leather stock which encumbered the necks of his company and which had been retained as a part of the uniform merely because of a venerable tradition. He also allowed his men, when on active service, to go unshaven. We who live in times when the English Army has been turned upside down cannot fully appreciate the dismay which fell upon the authorities in Pall Mall when they jiearned of those grave misdoings. What? The leather stock abolished! What? The razor gone out of use! There was only one course to be adopted with this revolutionary young Captain. He was placed on a rickety troop-ship bound fur China, with the cer- tainty that she would be wrecked on the way. The ship, indeed, was wrecked— she foundered in the Straits of Banca; but Captain Wolseley was picked up safe and sound, and, being at no great distance from India, wasjsent to help iu suppressing the Sepoy mutiny. He had lost all his kit; he had not even a clean shirt and a tooth brush; bat he managed to make his way to Lucknow and was chosen by Sir Colin Campbell to take part in the relief. Con- trary to orders, he carried the mess house; contrary to orders, he drove the enemy out of the Moti Mebel; contrary to orders, his servant having beeu shot froni a loophole, he dashed out of cover and bore the wounded man into safety amid a rain of bullets. When he entered the Residency everybody cried: ‘‘Wo'seley was the first in! Wolseley has the Victoria crogs!” but Wolseley raised hia hand. ‘‘No,” said he, ‘Bugler Jones was firstin; not L"” And Sir Colin Campbell, hotheaded, warm- hearted, rode up in angry haste and cried; “How dare you storm the mess house? How dared you drive vut the enemy? How dared you leave cover and pick up a wounded man and carry him in, and tend him, and—and—God bless you, my dear boy !”—Kate Field’s Washington.
The Fate of the Hen.
Once an ardent bicyclist was relating his latest adventure, and explaining to the in- quiring family the reason of the strange condition of his new bicycle trousers.
“You see, the road was smooth and straight, and I was going for all I was worth—the old wheel was just hamming— when suddenly one of those dreadful hens the country people persist in keeping ran outin front of my ‘bike.’ When the hen saw the wheel coming after her, she began to run, ouly instead of getting out of the way, she ran straight ahead. I shouted and hallooed, but she kept on.
“Then I slowed up, and so did that hen. Then I turned a bit to the right—just after the hen turned that way. Then I turned to the left, andthere was that hen. I did all I could to make her get out of my way or to get out of hers, but it was no une. So at last I gave up trying to save her from her fate. The glycerine is to be applied with a cotton cloth when the glass is rather warm and entirely dry.
