These macaroons are chewy and sweet . . . they have an attrac- tive. bumpy appearance. They stand up well and hold their shape. Something new in the way of a cookie type.

Yield-ails dozen Inacaroons.

2 egg whites

EL easpoon salt

'A teaspoon cream of tartar

33 cup fine granulated sugar

1:5 teaspoon vanilla

in cup shredded cocoanut

Vs cup cut-up semi-sweet choc-

olate or ready-prepared choc- olate chips

2 cups crisp sweetcoated puffed

wheat cereal

Beat the egg whites with the salt until foamy; sprinkle with the cream of tartar and beat until stiff but not dry.

Gradually beat in the sugar. beating after each addition until .mbgture will stand in peaks. Beat .in vanilla.

Drop by teaspoonfuls .greased baking sheet.

There are over thirty species of Hracl-nllhs. mostly native to Africa andregious as far north as the Mediterranean. They were men- tioned commonly in garden liter- ature as early as fiften hundred and ninety six. at which time there were single and double varieties. blue, white and pink. Lemon-colored varieties were add- ed in the nineteenth century. The Dutch made a specialty of l-lyiwi-ntihs and grow them with the greatest success. Methods of propagation are very involved. Cuts are made across the hue of the bulb and along these cuts. the young bulbs are formed. They are removed then and are grown for five years or more to make bulbs of merahantable size. Hyacintihs have been grown in this garden for many years and many more are needed for early color and fragrance; they look especially well with low white Arabia. In February it is good to have several bowls of fragrant Hyacinth: blooming in the home; they can be easily kept until the fall when they can be planted out in the garden to give years of beauty. A letter has been received ask- hug for some in-form.a,ilorn on the care of the Cyclamen. and at the beginning . . . I find them a dif- ficult houseplant but very beauti- ful and worth a little effort. They do not like a dry sunny wiidow but they grow much better in a cool window and need careful watering. When the blooming period is over in the spring. reduce the water supply and keep in a cool room until it is safe to put out in the garden in the shade of a shrub. Early in August the com is lifted and the soil replaced by a fresh mixture of good garden soil and leaf mold and the corm planted high with half in the soil and half on top. the plant watered and placed it: a cool shady spot until early in September, the Cyclamen is brought in to a window with morning sun where leaves soon develop. lt must never dry out and one grower places the pot on I. block of wood in a deep bowl and keeps enough water in the bowl to almost reach the base of the pot and.a1-ways uses warm water. The most important thing to remember in growing Cyclamen is that they need careful water- and not too direct sun nor too much heat.
