, His genial smile and warm handshake were extended to friend and visitor, and it was truly a pleasure and a privilege to visit his home. His unfailing courtesy and consideration to both young and old typified his greatness of heart, and well merited for him the respect and affection of those with whom he came in contact.

on May 7, Edward A. Rieder, F.S.A. was elected President of the Company to succeed the late Harry L. Guy.
Mr. Rieder, who is a native of Kitchener, Ontario, joined The Mutual Life in 1931, following graduation from the University of Toronto with the degree of Bachelor of Commerce. A fel- low of the Society of Actuaries, he has had a distinguished ca- reer with the Company during the past twenty-eight years. He served in the Actuarial, Group and Reassurance Departments .

pointment as Assistant Actuary in 1938. He was appointed As- sociate Actuary in 1945, Actu- ary in 1948, Assistant Genergl Manager and Actuary in 1954, Assistant General Manager in 1956, and Vice-President and General Manager in 1958. He was elected to the Board of Directors in January, 1959 and in February was elected Execu- tive Vice-President. Mr. Rieder is a Past-President of the Cana- - dian Association of Actuaries and has served on a number of committees of The Canadian Life Insurance Officers Associa- tion. ‘
He is active in community affairs in his home city, is a member of the Kitchener-Wa- terloo Hospital Commission and - is a Past-President of the Gyre. Club.
