Another Mill for P. E Isiand Wheat Grew- ers to Supply,

A little over three years ago some of the enterprising business men of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia,, conceived the idea of build- ing a medern flour mill with machinery for manufacturing cora-meal andgfeed as well,and thus by manufacturing there products keep at home a large part of the money that is sent abroad.

They at once set themselves to work and gave the questicn a most careful and searching investigation and feund, after looking into the business to be done and knowing the results of some of the mills of the west, thata modern mil! with the improved roller process would undoubted- ly be a financial success. A strong com~ pany was at once formed and a desirable site secured on the East River in the tow: of New Glasgow where the plant is erected. Tae mill and elevator were designed and the machinery coostrueted by the best mil! builders of Ontario, and as a result the company bas one of the latest and most<up-to date mil's in Canada. The mill is eighty seven feet high and the elevator ninety feet high. The elevator isso situated alongside the river that vessela can te diseharged, and Care standing on the rail track on the opposite side unioaded git the same time. With the late improved “ship leg” an ordi- nary vesselcan be discharged in a few hours. The mill building is large and capacious and when it was being eonstruct- ed provision was made that, if at any time, it was found necessary to increase the the capasity it eould be done with the least poerible cost.

New Glasgow is a great distributing point and the centre of a large consuming population. With railway facilities that few towns in the province are fayoured with it is one of the most desirable, if not the moet desirable, places in the Maritime Provinces to carry Oo such an ent: rprise,

By water, corn ia Frought in from the American and wheat from the Canadian Lake ports and pot alongside the com- pany’s elevator without trans shipment: Untila few months ago the company used mostly alvogether Ontario and Manitoba wheats brought in during the navigation season by water from the Lake ports down the St. Lawrence. .

The company is vow grinding over 300, $00 bushels annually besides corn; and it is expected that the output will be largely increased during the next year. When the company started it was expected that only Ontario awd Manitcba wheats would be used, but some native wheats were sent to the mill to test and the result was very gratifying indeed.

Then attention was atonce directed to Prince Edward Island as being a great wheat-producing province aud several cars of wheat were ordered,and during the last few monthsthe Island wheats have been fairly tested and while some kinds

; have no commercial value to the company

yet many of them compare favorably with wheats from Ontario. It takes a little more Island wheat than of Ontario to make a barrel of flour, becauee it is sotter and cannet be milled as Closely as ‘Jntario wheat, but the flour from the best Island wheat ground with the roller pro- eess is equal to any om the market.

able for the company’s purposes are Red Fife, White Fife and White Chaff; and of these three

White Fife and White Chaff are preterred. Many others have been tested, such as Colorsdo Bearded and White Russia, but they have proven to be too starchy and soft to be of commercial value. As the farmer will soon be select~ ing his seed wheat, it will be well for him to select the Fifes and White Chaff;for they are just as easily grown and will find a much more ready market.

If the faemers will exercise due care in preparing the soil, selecting good clean wheat of the right kind and harvesting and cleaning the grain, they will have no trous ble in disposing of all the wheat the Island

Siz,—In the list of Grand Jurymen, as given in the Examiner last week,I am pained, but not surprised, to find but the names of two Catholics. Does Sheriff McDonald, who, I understand, appoints the Grand Jurymen, consider the Catholics of Kings County unfit to serve ae jurore? Is it considered dangerous to the tafety of the State to here a decent representation of Catholica let alone @ large majority of them, together in the jury box? Would a majority of Catholics serving in the honorable capacity of Grand Jurors be Jikely to hatch a “guopowder plot” and, probably destroy the Court House, judge and lawyere at one blow? Manifesily, this must be the chief reason why only two. or three Catholics are ever in the grand jury panel; or are the uld penal-laws yet in torce iv the vicinity of the Georgetown Court House ?, All this, while the Catholics are two to one nay threeto one, in Kings County ! Is this treatment of Catholics in accordan e with equal rights ? Presbyterian Church at Little Sands have great cause for gratification at the success which attended their Concert and Basket Social, in aid efthe funds for the con- struction of their handsome sew church, on the evening of the Ist inst, when -the magnifceat sum of $101.70 wae realized. Long before the hour for opening arrived every available seat in the old church which was artistically decorated for the occasion, wae occupied, and standing room was ata premium, but the large crowd was such a good natured and happy one, that the best of order prevailed throughout. A ehoice, though rather short, programe consisting of singing, readings and recita- hon, wes admirably rendered, reflecting great credit on the performers, It is un- necessary to particularize, as the hearty applause accorded each number is anfh- cient guarantee of how favourably it was reeeived. The namerous and handsome baskets were offzred atauction by Mr. A. J. McInnis, of Murray River, to whose well known ability in this line is largely due the financial success of the evening.
