Mr. Chester Shaw warned that the quality of. the Island potatoes were in real Jeopardy because the growers were killing the vines before maturity. "If we are to stay in the business we must pay more attention to the mealiness and quality of our potatoes," he stated.

"We cannot protect the quality with immature potatoes," he con- tinued. "Any disappointments we have had. have been traced back and nine-tenths of the cases have come from fields where the vines were killed."

Ottawa is working on the ideal of grading potatoes with regard to their starch content, Mr. Show replied in answer to a question by Col. G. E. Full. Canada Grade 1 potatoes are required to be 1472. starch.

Commissioner's Duties

Col. Cllngham outlined the du- ties'of the trade commissioners in the various countries in which they are employed. Among the countries in which these trad: commissioners work are Aus- tralia. France, Holland. U. K.. Uruguay and Argentina.

Seed samples have been sent by the Department to France, Bel- gium and Portugal. Four kinds of Canadian seed have been listed in Portuguai on the imported list. he stated. but Portugal has no money to buy them.

Samples have also been sent to South Africa, he said. but the Department have not heard whether or not they were favor- able. Samples of the Canso and Keswick, which are being distri- buted in the province this year. wl'll be sent to Venezuela in the fa i.

The department also has area desks in the United Kingdom. Asia, Latin America. United States, France and the Middle East. Other divisions and bar- eau's working with the Trade and Commerce Department are the Information Division. Transporta- tion Divlsion, Dominion Bureau of Statistics and the Export Credit Insurance Corporation.

(AP) Defence Secretary Marshall of the United States Fri- day flew in and held high secret conferences here and in Korea. setting of! speculation that a new and major turn in the war was near.

On his return from the Korean front, however, Marshall told cor- respondents his surprise visit had "no connection whatsoever" with any current peace moves.

The Defence Secretary said his trip was "purely military." But he added that he carried no new dir- ectives on fighting the Korean war.

In Korea he told field corres- pondents: ”I came to Korea to congratulate our army leaders on their achievements."

iLocal Firm Obtains ; Ship Repair Contracts

Work in connection with the refitting of two ships under the Department of Defense production programme has been awarded to Bruce Stewart and Company, Ltd., Charlottetown, according to a statement issued from the Depart- ment at Ottawa yesterday.

The work will be part of a. 312.- 000,000 program for the convers- ion and refitting of 34 figates and minesweepers to be reconditioned within the next two years by shipyards in the Maritimes and st.

Sir Eugene Fisei. Former Li.-Gov. Of Quebec Dies

RIVIERE DU LOUP, Que.. June ti - (CF) - Sir Eugene Fiaet, Lieutenant.-Governor of Quebec for almost 111 years after a career that saw him in the civil service and later in politics, will be buried as a soldier.

He died today. aged '17, in the splendid home he moved into some six months ago to spend the last days of his busy life among the rolling countryside of this Lowerpst. Lawrence River town.

Sir Eugene was seriously ill for months and during his last"- year at Bois de Coulonge, official resident of the Lieutenant-Gov- ernor in Quebec City, was forced to curtail his activities.

He suffered a heart attack shortly after he came to Rlviere du Loup in September last year and his health grew worse. But he rallied. as he had done often .before, until a severe relapse two weeks ago.

Lady Fiset and members of his family were at his bedside in the big Riviero du Loup home when he died.

Primarily Sir Eugene was a sol- dier. He had the brisk manner, the rough language that some- times startled civilian ears.

Today it was announced a mili- tary funeral was planned.

The Canadian Army will be re- presented by Maj.-Gen. R. O. G. Morton, Eastern Canada com- mander. and Col. Maurice De- rome, Eastern Quebec district commander.

The funeral will be held in Riviera du Loup with burial at Rimoueki, chief town of the coun- try which he represented for 15 years in the House of Commons.

Tributes came today from Prime Minister St. Laurent, Hon. Gas- pard Fauteux. who succeeded Sir Eugene as Lieutenant-Governor, and Premier Dup-lessis.

Special Aiomic Training For Civilian Nurses

OTTAWA. June 8 -(CP) Canada's civiliap nurses from coast to coast will be given spec- ial training in the handling of casualties of atomic or other forms of attack.

Health Minister Martin disclos- ed the plan today under which travelling teams of specially- trained nurseswillconduct courses to train other nurses in the care of victims of A.B.C.-atomic, bac- teriological and fare.

The Minister. who recently as- sumed administration of civil de- fence, said is "chain reaction" method of training will be used. A small group of specialists will teach in corps of potential in- structure who in turn will conduct courses for nurses who will have roles in the civil defence forces as well as those who may be called in emergency.

New Bridge Construction Possibilities Discussed,

Possibility of building a new bridge across the Hillsboro River right alongside the present bridge was indicated yesterday in a statement prepared by Mr. Gor- don White, Provincial Engineer. and presented at the concluding hearing of the Board of Trans- port Commissioners. It was reud by Mr. F. M.- Covert, counsel ap- pearing for the Province in op- position to the application of tiic C.N.R. to abandon the railway service between this city and Murray Harbour via the bridge.

The question of utilizing the present piers on which to erect the new spans now owned by the Provinciai Government, but built originally for the Chinese Na- tionalist Government. was intro- duced the previous dny by Mr. R. 0. Stewart, assistant chief en- gineer, C.N.R., Montreal. He ques- tlonedwhether it could be done without seriously damaging them.

"The difficulties at the piers are fully realized, as is the need to keep highway traffic moviniz during construction." Mr. White's statement reads. "It might he found, after thorough investiga- tion. that the best plan would he to leave the present structure in- tact until the new bridge is built beside it." This would take care of traffic during construc- tion and assure a satisfactory foundation, "something which is at present in some doubt.” ,

The merit of a suggested "patching job” on the present bridge was questioned from the point of view of public safety in Mr. White's statement. Mr. Stew- art had mentioned this possibility Thursday. laying it would cost 870,000 to strengthen the' brldgge sufficiently to safely carry a load of 60,000 pounds. For an addition- al Sl30.000. he said, repairs could be made which would make the briclgo last indefinitely.

Combined Bridge Wanted

Mr. White's statement said that recent events have shown that even modern bridges can fail suddenly. and asked: "Should we take further risks on a wrought- lron bridge of which many meni- bers have already been seriously damaged?" The statement added that only last month one member was broken in a traffic accident and the break showed that the part had been broken over half- way through in a previous accl- dent. The statement continued: "in any case we do not want a highway bridge alone. We want a combined highway - railway bridge."

It was admitted that the bridges built for the Government of China do not exactly fit the existing supporting piers of Hills- borough Bridge, and may not he as economical as some other

Early in 1941 he was sent the Middle East where his ser- vice included pariicipation in the occupation of Persia. Whilst in this area his headquarters were H.M.S. Eu-phrates at Basra at the head of the Persian Gulf and also at Aibadan where the Angio-Iran- ian Oil Com.pan'y's refinery is located.

He returned to England in July, 1943, in the first convoy from Alexandria to Gibraltar going west.

Heavy Toll In Traffic Djihs

Ten persons in Prince Edward Island have lost their lives in traffic accidents since April 14 this year and nine of the deaths occurred within the past month. This alarming toll is believed to be unprecedented in the -Province.
