liquor Cases Heard Yesterday

A resident of Hermitage was fined 3200. and costs or three months by Magistrate Gilbert A. Gaudet in the Queens County M-.igisirates Court yesterday morn- ing. when he was convicted on a charge of being in possession of a still. Three men, residents of Mt. Edward Road. Parkdale and Dun- siaffnage were each fined 8100 and costs or three months when convicted of possession of spirits contrary to the Excise Act, and another resident of Dunstnfinage. convicted on a similar harge was remanded until October 15 for sen- tcnce.

Three residents of Charlottetown were convicted on charges of pos- session of liquor in a place other than their residence. Two were fined s20 and costs or 30 days and the other fined S25 and costs or

A charge of speeding against a resident of Brackley resulted in a fine of :10 and costs or in days. A case involving two residents of Charlottetown charged with as- sault and damage to property was adjourned until October 15th, and evidence for the prosecution -was continued in a case against a res- ident of Hermitage, charged with the theft of logs, and further re-

. manded until October 17th. A case against a resident of Traeadie. charged under the Temperance Act, was adjourned for one week.

CAR WHEEL STOLEN A visitor from Moncton registered at the Charlottetown Hotel reported the loss or a complete front wheel. with the hub cap, from his car last night. The car was parked on the Rochford square side of the hotel, and was resting on the brake drum when the loss was discovered at about 10 p.m. The police were notified and are investigating the theft.

INVITATION FROM REDS

iiew Alarih To Be Installed On City Hall Root

This city will have its new fire alarm system installed as quickly as the equipment can be obtained from the manufacturers. At the monthly meeting of the City Council it was voted, to accept the tender of the Fyr-Fyter Company, Hamilton, Ont., of 53.386 which includes installation.

The new system is of the air horn type which may be heard for much greater distances than that in use at present. The old-style fire bell now used has caused much difficulty through 'inabiiit.y of citizens to hear it. In addition extensive repairs would be neces- sary to maintain it. '

The easier heard air-horn will be installed on the roof of City Hall and is expected to offer adequate warning of fires at all times. The resolution calling for its adoption was offered at the Council meeting by Councillor J. Lester O'Donnell and seconded by Councillor J. D. Stewart.

Friends here will regret to learn of the death in Saint John. Tuesday night of Ralph H. Fales.

M11 Fales. as a. young man. re- ... nvted his father's firm Frank Falos and Son, ships chandler-s and hardware. and was well and favoraibly known throughout the Province.

He later represented the Cana- dian Bag C0,, Montreal, and for twenty years was sales manager. He returned to Saint John some five years ago.

He is survived by two broth- ers Harry A. B. Fales, Saint John. and Frank S. Fates, Amherst; two sisters Mrs. W. G. Easte- ibrooks, Saint John. and Mrs. Robert H. L. Gilmore. Halifax.

Among those who will attend the funeral from here today are Messrs. George Thompson and Russel Clark.

Application Made For Branch charter

The application for a charter to form a Prince Edward island branch of the Engineering in- stitute of Canada was made re- cenvtly by a group of engineers here, with the hope that it will be granted in the near future.

To date. Prince Edward Island is the only Province without a branch. and with the anticipated granting of the charter it is ex- pected that there will be a mem- bership of approximately thirty engineers from all points of the island. Pending the formation of the branch. a provisional slate of officers has been appointed. con- sisting of W. K. Sharpe. M.E.l.C.. chairman, R. B. Smith, Jr. E.l.C.. secretary-treasurer. V. A. Ains- worth. M.E.l.C.. and D. E. Mac- Lean. Jr, E.l.C.

It is hoped that the President of the Engineering Institute of Canada. Dr. Ira P. McMann. M. E.I.C.. of Halifax. accompanied by the General-Secretary. Dr. J. Austin Wright. Two residents of I-Iaselbrook appeared in Queen's County Magistrates Court yesterday be- fore Magistrate Gilbert Gaudeton serious charges and had their case adjourned until next week.

One of the two men was charg- ed with 'painting a shotgun while his companion was charged with intoxication. Evidence on the intoxication charge only i was heard yesterday.

The case is reported to have arisen as a result of a watch be- ing kept on premises in that area by the R. C. M. P. who suspected the operation of an: illegal still. Apparently observed by the oc- cupants of the house, though their identity was reportedly unknown, the policemen were said to have been fired upon from the house under observation They were not injured.

Philip, unabashedly happy and even more at ease than the girl who will one day take over the British throne. saluted and waved incessantly and gave the feminine element a big treat with his spon- taneous, flashing grin.

For them. the day started out before a crowd of around 4,000 at their train arrival point four miles from the centre of the capital, but that number quickly mush- roomed until an unofficiaily-esti- mated 50,000 were milling around Confederation square to see the Princess place a wreath' on the National war Memorial and take part in other ceremonies in honor of Canada's war dead.

So far as observers could tell, the. other crowds stacked up about this way: 20.000 around the Parliament Buildings, 14.900 in a ceremony at Lansdowne Park Sports Centre, where 14.000 school children sang for the couple. and 100000 along the route of the main tour through the city.

Besides that, many more saw them as they drove from place to place to keep a. tight schedule of engagements that included a. re- ception at Government House, residence of Governor-General Viscount Alexander a. luncheon with the Prime Minister and the state dinner at Government House.

A surprise party. honouring the occasion of the 35th wedding an- niversary of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Holmes was held at the home of their son Mr. Myron Holmes and Mrs. Holmes, Kingston, on sept- ember 29th with a large gathering of relatives and friends in attend- ance.

was Mr. George Kitson, who cal- led upon Erma Newson to read a very nicely worded address eon- gratulating the happy couple on their fulfillment of their youthful ideals, and the wish for many more years of travelling down life's highway together. Mr. Elmer Younker presented Mr. and Mrs. Holmes with a sub- stantial purse. and 'ittle Miss Judith Holmes, grand-daughter of the honoured couple, presented Mrs. Ilolmes with a bouquet. The presentation of a nicely decorated wedding cake was made by Mrs. Myron Holmes. All present then joined hands and sang "For They are Jolly Good Fellows".

The guests were entertained by I-Idber Campbell, violin, and Roland Ward, guitar.,accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Everett Holmes.

dustrial city across the Ottawa River.

The couple who captivated hab- itants in the Quebec heart of French Canada yesterday, was greeted by thousands of Hull

woriners decked in Sunday best and loosing plenty of enthusiasm.

Coming back to Ontario. they drove to Parliament Hill for the ceremonies that the Prime Minis- ter just failed to make.

First, they took a quick tour through the Commons. opened yesterday for a special fall ses- sion but recessed two days to allow parliamentarians to join the festivities.

From there. they went to the spacious, tail-ceilinged railway committee room of the same bluld- lnig. where the famous Queen Maryls carpet - embroidered by her dowager grandmother - was received by the Princess from the Imperial Order. Daughters of the Empire and then presented by her to the National Gallery of Canada.

The Princess told a small gath- ering of selected guests that her grandmother is "most happy" that her intricately-worked tapestry is to go to the gallery. And she said Queen Mary has asked her

The presentation of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets pilot's wings will be made in the near future to J. Lloyd Cutciiffe of the Char- lottetown Squadron of the R. C. A. C., who passed flying and ground school examinations on a course given this summer by the Moncton Flying Club, it was re- ported yesterday by 1170 G. 13. Rayner. Cadet Cutcliffe. who is from Fredericton, has been a member of the Charlottetown Squadron for three years, and qualified for the course by passing the exam- inations which are given to the cadets each spring, and the course, with all expenses paid, is supervised by the R. C. A. F.

Competing in the Dominion Small Bore rifle competitions for the first time this season, the local squadron placed 25th with over 300 cadet squadrons in the Dominion entered, and 4th among the Maritime entries, Ian 'MacQuarrie, Hampton. was the squadron's best shot of the year, and with the acquisition of Capt. Roy Mccabe as coach, results are expected to be much better this year.
