No definite undertaking can be given at present with regard to the construction of a new Naval Barracks in Char' tetown, ac- cording to word received recently from the National Defense Depart- ment at Ottawa by Mr. A. Walthen Gaudet, secretary of the Char- lottetown Board of Trade.

The letter. which is signed by Mr. Paul Pare. executive assistant to the M' . acknowledges re- ceipt of an inquiry from the Char- lottetown Board.

"The need for a new building for the Division at Charlottetown has been recognized for some time and the question has been and still is under active considera- tron." Mr. Pare states. "While it has been possible to make A start on other types of naval buildings, the overall construction program is still largely concerned with the construction of buildings urgently needed for specific operations.

"Because of these requirements, you will appreciate that we can- not undertake simultaneousl the construction of new Barracks in every locality where they are needed.

The opening of the new Mental Health Clinic was announced Tuesday in the Legislature in a statement in the Speech from the Throne.

Long planned as a greatly need- ed service in this Province. the Clinic has been located in a suite of offices on the second floor of the Riley Building on Queen Street. It will serve mainly as a centre for psychiatric treatment. The clinic opened last week and to date approximately one dozen patients have attended it.

Attendance is on a purely vol- untary basis and the great.major- ity of patients visit it by them- selves in hope of being assisted to overcome mild mental conditions. The plan behind the clinic was to have such a centre available to which doctors in various parts of the Province might send their patients for treatment just out- side the realm of straight med- ical practice.

"I feel it would be a good move on the part of the Government to provide a franchise to the Can- adian National Railways to oper- ate busses instead of passenger trains in all sections of this Pro- vince," said Dr. Lorne Bonnell

A five daya' old baby born in the Prince Edward Island Hos- pital last Saturday with a condi- tion known as a splna bifida was flown to the Montreal Neurologi- cal Institute yesterday. Arrange- ments for this child's admission to the Institute were hurriedly made by wire on the recommen- dation of Dr. E. S. Giddingl, the family physician, by Miss Verna Darrach. R.N.. Director of Red Cross Crippled Children's Work. who accompanied the tiny baby to Montreal. It is to be hoped that it will be possible for spec- ialists in this line of work to operate on this child immediately and restore the baby to as nearly normal as possible.

Mr. W. R. Shaw, Provincial Deputy Minister of Agriculture. who was elected yesterday for the fourth nsecutive year as chair- man of the Potato Committee of the Horticultural, Council of can- ada. Mr. Shaw would have gone to the presidency of this nation- wide organization but for the reg- ulation which prevents a civil servant from attaining this posit- ion.

Also attending the Horticultural Council meetings now in progress at Ottawa are Messrs. C. 1'. Shaw District Fruit and Vegetable In- spector, Dominion Department of Agriculture. and W. P. MacLeod. senior inspector. Before returning they will attend the annual ses- sions ot officials from the Fruit and Vegetable divisions across Canada.
