A PIED CROW by Dan McAskill

The birding was hot for unusual species this summer and no less so when Ray Cooke received a report of a Black-billed Magpie shortly after getting several life listers for P.E.I. Ray Cooke and I ventured up to Miminegash and, after some initial difficulty in finding the described bird, viewed a black and white crow to raven sized bird with a massive bill that was definitely not a magpie. We considered albino variations of either crows or ravens but the pattern was so distinctive that we felt it was something unusual. Checks of European books did not help but Ray found an illustration of the Pied Crow in one of the world guides to birds. How the Pied Crow arrived on P.E.I. will probably never be discovered. Perhaps it hitch-hiked on a ship or in a container or perhaps it escaped from a bird fancier’s establishment. Judging by the several reports, it certainly covered the Island while it was visiting!
