They feel relieved from demon foes ; They kneel, their hearts they bow ; And then a shout of joy arose From all within Lucknow.

Then to their cheer, ‘ God save the Queen !’ Canie back that strain divine, * Shoald auld acquaintance be forgot,

And the days o’ lang syne!’

Now music’s heard where cannons roared ; With joy their faces shine,

As pipers round their festive board March playing ‘ Auld Lang Syne.’

Lucknow, Nov. 18, 1857, —M¥ Lord,—I have the honour to apprise your lordsbip that I left Cawnpore on the 9th November, and jomed the troops under the command of, Brigadier-G eneral Hope Grant, C. B., the same day, at Camp Buntara, about six miles from Alumbagh. There being a few detachments ou, the road, I deemed it expedient to wait till the 12th, before commencing my advance. On that day I marched carly for Alumbagh with the Naval Brigade, eight beaty guns ; Bengal Horse Artillery, ten guas ; Bengal Horse Field Battery, six guns; Heavy Field Battery, Royal Artillery; Detachments Bengal and Punjaub Sappers and Miners; H. M.’s 9th Lancers; Detachments Ist, 2nd, and 5th Punjaub Cavalry and Hodson’s Horse ; H.M.’s 81h, 534, 75th, and 93d Regiments of Infantry ; 2nd and 4th Punjaub Infantry. Probable total, 700 cavalry, 2,700 infantry. The advanced guard was attacked by two guns and a body of about 2,000 infantry. After a smart skirmish the guns were taken; Lieat Gough, commanding Hodson’s Irregular Horse, Naving distinguished himself very much in a brilliant charge by which this object was effected. The camp was pitched on that eveving at Alumbagh. ‘This place I found to be annoyed to 2 certain extent by guns placed in different positions in the neézhbourhood, I caused the post to be cleared of lumber avd cattle, and placed al) my tents in it. { made my arrangewents for marching without baggage when I should reach the park of Dilkoosha, and the men were directed to have three day’s food in their haversacks. by a battalion of detachments under Major Barnston, who was, I regret to say, severely wounded ; Captain Peel leading up his heavy guns with extraordinary gallantry within a few yards of the building, to batter the massive stone walls. The withering fire of the Highlanders effectually covered the Naval Brigade from great loss, but it was an action almost unexampled in war. Captain Peel behaved very much as if he had been laying the Shannon alongside an enemy's frigate. This brought the day's operations to a close. On the next day communications were opened to the Jeft rear of the barracks to the canal, alter overcoming considerable difficulty. Capt. Peel kept up a steady cannonade on the building called the mess-house. This building, of considerable size, was defended by a ditch, about twelve feet broad and scarped wit masorny, aud beyond that a loop-holed mud wall. I determined to use the gans as much as possible in taking it. About three p.m. when it was considered that men might be sent to storm it witheut much risk, it was taken by a company of the $0th foot under Capt. THE BATTLES IN MALWA AND DESTRUCTION OF MUTINEERS,

On the 21st the brigadier received information that the rebels from Neemuch were advancing in force on Mundesore, where a good number had already assembled, and were in possession of the fort aud town, So we marched on, and encamped about three miles from Mundesore. A large body of the insurgents appeared on the hills round about, and is was plainly discerned that they were determined te show something in the shape of a“ front.” About 3 p. m. the enemy was observed, ia battle array, with colours flying, slowly wending towards our camp. The alarm was given, and the Bengal Artillery galloped up the hill, and instaatly opened fire upon them, with good effect. Their blood-stained flags were soon pelted down, and the miscreants turned round, and fled in disorder. In the interim the cavalry arrived, and pursuing, “ left none to tell the tale.” Neither the 14th Dragoons nor Hyderabad Cavalry bothered their heads with prisoners. The field was strewn with the dead of the enemy, while on our side we had Lieut. Prendergast, Madras Engi- neers, dangerously, two mean cf the 14th Dragoons, and a few of the Hyderabad Cavalry, wounded. This day we captured three flags; and in the course of the evening were captured by the respective pickets, 70 prisoners. On the morning of the 22d we marched and encamped before Mun- desore, When approaching the town the rascals greeted us with a few rounds, evidently from 6-pounders, but which we treated with the utniost contempt. On the following moruing, the 23d, we proceeded on the Neemuch road, as far as the village of Ghario, about four miles north-west of Mundesore. We passed through several large cholum fields, where all was dead stillness, end which afforded a splendid covering to a bidden foe; and the lofty trees in the vicinage of Ghario - contributed to shelter the vagabonds from the fire of our avenging army. Nevertheless, althvagh they advaneed with “fiying colours,” they were soon taught a lesson which it would be impossible for them ever to forget.
