Weelum Carmuchty was in love, though hw tried to disguise the fact from the world for the one resson that he was uncertain as to his ultimate success, Weelum could not brook defeat, and have his name bandied about the village

If he could only have seen the exprsssion of impatience she wore as she watched him from the garret light, while he ‘powter- ed’’ about the Kail yard preparatory to reaching the kichen Weelum would have

abandoned his cunning and declared himself at once. With all her passion Kirstie herself

played a double role,misled and often dis- couraged her lover. She would hold her head up on occasion and look proud, and Weelum would stare blankly, wondering if he were a fool te give more time to his suit. He may have reflected thuswise, many atime, but lt always passed off in his calmer moments, when he thought of ber, and especially of the evening on the brae when they kept their first iryst, and she smiled like one transformed. Moreover, Kirstie was a handsome lass, well favored, and,in the eyes of Weelum, she walked like a queen. I'll be bound that she was constantly in his thoughts, but it became necessary for him to bestir himself if he were to win her, How he wished it were Kirstie that did the pro- posing. Often had he composed the words that were to determine the matter,

walking up and down the floor, but al- ways at the crucial moment his mind was in chaos; something Kirstie would
