These carpetbayggers represent themselves as buyers for large Amorican and Canadian establishments, but these who know say that they are no other than paid emissaries of the Longley-Wiman combination, and that this is the advance guard of the grand army that will be sent over later on. The Conservatives of Three Rivers have, how- ever, put the farmers upon their guard in more localities than one, and it is said that several of the runners referred to have come in for exceedingly warm receptions.

Canada’s Duty.

LORD ABERDEEN ENDORSES SIR JOHN’S RE- MARKS AS TO CANADA’S DUTY RE’ THE M'KINLEY BILL.

A special to the St. John Sun from Ot- tawa (Sept. 26) reports: Lord Aberdeen visited the exhbition to-day, and in a short speech gave his views on the current trade questions, Ashe is considered Gladstone’s right bower, his opinions are considered im- portant, and it is gratifying to find they are in perfect accord with these of Lord Stanley and the Canadian ministers. In referring to trade matters he said: ‘“*{ have read with interest and pleasure the speech of your eminent and illustrious premier, in which he spoke in very sanguine terms cf the trade prospects of Canada, notwith- standing what is threatened on the part of your southern neighbors. That speech was well calculated to remove some uneasiness which has naturally been expressed. Speak- ing as one more directly conneeted with the Old Country, I may say that we look with anything but approval upon the Mc- Kinley act, not any selfish alarm, but be- cause we realize that we have an identity of interest and sympathy with Canada and the other colonies in this matter. I have heard it stated that the prosperity of Canada depends largely upon the Canadian hen and that the egg market is destroyed, but I believe from what I have seen here that the Canadian hen is quite able to feather her own nest.”” Lord Aberdeen ad- vocated the procuring of fast Atlantic steamers with refrigerator compartments adapted to the necessities of trade in all such perishable articles as eggs and fruit.

The MeKinley Bill.

CHANGES MADE BY THE MITTEE,

A Washington despatch reports that the McKinley Bill is to take effect October Ist, and February Ist next is fixed as the ulti- mate date upon which goods deposited in bond before Octobr Ist may be withdrawn at the old rates of duty. In case fresh or frozen fish from American fisheries are made free by both houses, the conference imposed the limitation they must be caught by American vessels in fresh water. Other fish are made dutiable at three-quarter cents per pound. All paragraphs inserted by the Senate providing for a customs commission were stricken out by the Conference. The conference agreed to .the Senatereciprocity and retaliation amendment changing the date to January, 1892, instead of July next. The aggregate reduction of revenue by the bill is estimated at $66,000,000.

DIED.

At her home, New Perth, Sept. 20, 1890, at the early age of 23 years, Edith Mary, beloved wife of Geo. M. McDonald, and daughter of William Moar, Esq., New Perth. Short but happy was the married life of Mrs. McDonald, and sad the loss to her stricken husband and baby boy (only a few hours old) when death claimed the young wife and mother. The deceased was a woman of a deeply religious tone of mind. She loved Him who first loved us, She endeavored to serve Him,and always encouraged her young husband in attending to the reading of God’s holy word, and committ- ing themselves to the care of the Heavenly Father before retiring to rest. She rests now from her labors ; her works will fellow her. Nothing is lost in the service of our loving Father. The seed sown in her labor and love will bear fruit. May God preserve the inno- cent babe, the sorrowing father and many friends. They sorrow, but not without hope.

Porators. —There has been a very good demand this week and the market has kept closely sold.up with very little change in prices. Dest Eastern Hebrons have been selling generally at 68c with now and then a fancy Houlton lot at 70c. Best Rose steady at 65c. Burbanks in good supply at 65c.

Fisu.—Codfish are still in light supply, and are bringing full prices. Box herring in steady demand. Pickled herring in fair request at unchanged quotations. Mackerel are in larger supply, and are meeting with a slow sale at from $17 to $23 per bbl.

The Sunday Chron‘cle’s Calcutta corres- pondent says it is reportedjthe troops in Goa are committing the wildest excesses and shooting the people indiscriminately. Several popular leaders have been arrested and shot in their residences. The resi- dences of others are beseiged and a lively fusilade proceeds between the besiegers and besieged. Numbers of people have fled to the sanctuary of the cathedralin Olf. It is rumored that the Governor-General is hid- ing in the palace and is deaf to petitions from the inhabitants. Many women and children who fled thither for protection have been bayonetted by the palace guard. Several dynamite bombs have been thrown into the palace by a band of citizen soldiers. The Governor justifies the acts of the troops on the ground that a revolution has been declared. It is estimated that 3,000 persons were killed and wounded in two days fighting.

News Notes.

Heavy rains have damaged the cotton crop in the Memphis, Tenn., district.

The miners’ strike at Troppan, Austrian Silesia, continues. Troops are guarding the pits.

Hot Springs, Ark., was visited by a ter- rible flood a few days ago, and the valley is in ruins.

It is understood that Mr. Parnell will shortly call a convention of the Irish Na- tionalist party.

The steamship ee made the trip from Queenstown to New York in five days twenty-one hours and twenty minutes.

Order has been restored at Goa, India, and the ringleaders in the election riots have fled. The elections continue.

Texas fever has attacked the herd of prize cattle exhibited by Messrs. Sotham & Stickney at the Detroit exhibition, and the bull Perfection, valued at two thousand dollars, is dead.

This season to date 208,5000 bushels of Canadian barley have been received at Chicago. Last year there were only 37,- 586. The present price for bright cargoes is 90 cents.
