Antics or A Cow.—A cow made things ively ror bicyclists and pedestrians on the Richmond Road for a while Jast «evening. Che animal came from the city alung Somereet street, and gave a young lady crossing that street at the Richmond Road a great scare by dashing past within a very short distance of her. Juet above the post office the cow started to race with an electric car and managed to get a leg struck. She then ran between two wheel- men, upsetting both in the dust. A little farther up she ran into a party of about a dozen cyclists, scattering «hem right and left, and giving the ladies a terrible scare. THE SOUTHERN CROSS.

If Job were to rise from the dead and look upon the heavens, says Professor J. See in The Atlantic, he would see the constellations related to one an- other as of old, but he would find that the pole had shifted its position among the stars, and if an immortal could wit- ness the grand phenomenon which the precession of the equinoxes produces in about 12,900 years he would find the heavens so altered th: at the former as- pect could be recognized only by an un- derstanding of the changes which had intervened.

As Humboldt justly remarks, the beautiful and celebrated constellation of the Southern Cross, never seen by the present inhabitants of Europe and visible in the United States only on our soMhern coast, formerly shone on the shores of the Baltic, and can again be seen in that latitude in about 18,000 years. The cross will then be visible on the shores of Hudson bay, but at pres- ent itis going rapidly southward, and in a few thousand years will be invisi- ble even at the extreme point of Florida.

In like manner the brilliant star Ca- popus in the constellation Argo, situat- ed some 37 degrees south of Sirius, is now Visible in the southern portion of the United States. In about 12,000 years it will cease torise even in Central America. From the same cause, if Ptol- emy were to again look upon the heay ens at Alexzndria, he would be unable fo recognize Alpha and Beta Centauri, | which he easily saw and catalogued in the time of Hadrian. At present these magnificent stars are just visible at the pyramids, near Cairo, and ina few more thousand years they can be seen by dwellers on the Nile onfy in upper Egypt.

London Book Thieves,

Suckling, the book seller, gave me quite a little chat on book thieves the other day. ‘‘Book thieves,’’ said he, ‘‘are most plentiful. They are also most audacions in disposing of their stolen wares. One of them did me rather neat- ly not long ago. I was sitting in my shop, thinking no harm, when a rather clerical looking man came in and offered me an abridged edition of Littre’s Dic- tionary at £1. Of course I bought it. Judge my surprise when I found out about two howrs afterward that the clerical looking gentleman had stolen that copy of Littre’s Dictionary from the stall in front of my own shop! I may add that I had the satisfaction of recovering some volumes and jugging that respectable clerical looking gentle- man, who, as I afterward found, had been doing many of my confreres in the same artistically nonchalant manner.’”’ —London Correspondence.

Identified by a Blind Man.

A blind man picked out his dead wife in the New York morgue afew days ago by his delicate sense of touch, says an exchange. Two women, both of the same name and both of whom died in Bellevue, were taken to the deadhoase at about the same time. When the morgue keeper caught the blind man’s right hand and guided it toan upturned face, he said, ‘‘No, no; that’s not my Mary!’’ The drawer was closed, and the next one was pulled out. The sightless man laifl down his stick this time and used both hands. His face was transfig- ured as the tips of his fingers rested on the sharp set, cold features. ‘‘Mary,’’ he whispered, ‘‘I have found you, dear! How thin your face has grown! How cold you are, Mary—how cold!’’ The blind man had made no mistake. The dead woman had been his wife.
