Tue snnouncementof the death of the Rev. Dr. Pope, of St. John, N.B., will be read with sincere regret by avery large circle of friends aud relatives in Prinee Edward Island. Mr. Pope was a son of the late Rev. Henry Pope, a minister of the conference of Eastern British America, and a nephew of the late Hon. Joseph Pope, Assistant Receiver Generel for the Province. Dr. Pope entered the min- istry of the Methodist Church in 1844, and for many years held @ prominent position filling eome of the beet circuits in the gift of Conference. He was recegnizid as one of the most effective und powerful preachers in the Maritime Previnces,—vigorous in intellect and cultured in taste. For twelve years Dr. Pope filled important circuits ip this Province, closing with a full terial term in the pasterate of the First Methedist Church in Charlottetown. From here he removed to Centenary Church, St. John, N. B. In 1877 he pub- lished two volumes of sermoas entitled “Draughts trom the Living Fountain.’ These volumes have founda permanent place in many of the Methodist homes of New Brunswick and Prince Edward Ie land ; and while they are prized for their intrinsic value they will also serve to per- petuate the memory of a leving and faith- ful pastor. Rev. Dr. Pope married a sister of our esteemed fellow citizen, Dr.
