On Wednesday, April 19, 1995 the World Wildlife Fund's Endangered Spaces Campaign announced that Prince Edward Island had earned a "8" during the 1994-1995 evaluation. This rating marks the significant progress made by the Island in setting aside 1,600 hectares of land including the Greenwich Sand Dunes. This achievement is significant in that 90% of the land on the Island is in private hands and only those areas free from mining, logging, oil and gas drilling, and hydro-electric development.
