Commendation of the work of the Superb tendent, Mr. W, L. Brenton, was expressed and reference made to the offer by him to take a reduc- tion in salary. Mr. MacNutt knew of the difficulties of the early days of the industry. It was wonderful what men could do in ctr-operation, in getting together for one purpose, the common good. Backed by such an organization as the Dairy As- sociation, the members were urged to carry on and make Prince Edward Island the Denmark of Canada. The overlapping of territory was one of the serious difficulties which raised overhead expenses. The change from the manufacture of cheese to butter had been very marked during the last few years, but the people of Canada ate on the average three pounds of cheese and thirty pounds of butter; therefore cheese was the more largely export- ed. In closing his address, Mr. Mac- Nutt invited the members to visit the Department of Agriculture and bring in their problems. ' Mr, McCaba, i-lazelbrook; placed a question before the meeting. He explained that buyers had bought butter in the summer, placed it in what they called cold storage, and through accidents, the butter had received a print of ink from the wrapper. Could the buyer come back to the factory and demand that the product be pasteurized, Mr. McCabc asked. Mr. W. I... Brenton, Dairy Super- intendent, stated that he had al- ways been opposed to the storing of creamery butter. Often papers had been used before the ink was suf- ficiently dry. if the wholesaler bought "at a snap", taking advan- tage of depressed market, his claims should not be consider-ed. If the butter lind been sold for storage, the factory should hold itself res- ponsible. The question was asked if the re- putation of the factory should he al- lowed to be ruined by buyers who sold butter which had been allowed by them to get into bad condition. Mr. Dewar thought that the agreement between the parties de- termined where a person's respon- sibilities ended.

Cheese Grading

Mr. F, T. Morrow, Federal Butter and Cheese Grader, was pleased to see many newcomers at the meeting this year, he said in making his re- port. Cheese grading in this pro- vince equalled that of Ontario in total score, Mr. Morrow said, and proceeded to set forth figures of the

ferent factories inspected. He was obliged to grade only the cheese in- tended for export. He remarked that there was 3,100 pounds of No. 3 cheese. A sum could be gained by raising this to the higher grade. There was a small percentage of the people 'who were difficult to handle.‘

It would be possible to save mon- ey by regaining the former average of about ten pounds of milk to make a pound of cheese, instead of twelve pounds which is now necessary due to high percentage of acid.

Butter Grading

Mr. Morrow stated that it would be necessary to have sweeter cream if a. higher grade of butter was de- sired. The discussion of a number of questions regarding the problems of the industry followed.

The question of preventing of privately owned concerns operating in organized territories was dis- cussed. The suggestion was made that-overhead be reduced in order that competition be successfully met. The resolutions committee was requested to sit in the iriaticr. Warbie fly control was also dis- cussed, and the use of a warble fly powder set forth. It WES. recom- mended that the farmers in an area. take up the matter. Mr. B. R. Brown, York, suggested that the eradication of the pest should be made a provincial matter, and should be taken up by the Legisla- ture. ,

A number of members stated that they had been successful in com- batting the pest by ordinary spray- ing. Dr. J. A. Clark expressed the opinion that a Dominion entomolo- gist was needed in this province. Tho question of merging factories in order to decrease overhead was also brought up.

It was suggested that co-operat-
