Draccen tro Deato.—A_ most distress— ing fatality occurred at Waweig, Clarlotte Co,N.B.,on Monday last. Two little boys, aged respectively six yeara and four years, children of Augustus Trundle, were playing in their yard with a pet calf, and the elder of the two children tied a rope on the calf’s neck and the otherj end he tied on the neck of his little brother. The calf started to run and dragged the child until his little neck was broken.

Reference was made recently to the bene- ficent influence of British rule in Egvpt, giving freedom, justice and prosperity where before existed slavery, oppression, brutality and siarvation. The-blessing of British rule in India has beeu still more atrikingly evident, although extended over a longer period of time. There too, justice, freedom and prosperity have replaced in- security, tyranny and bigotry, and despite the bloody interruption to British rule known as the Sepoy mutiny, caused by ignorance of or indifference to the religious prejudices of the people, the condition of India is a marvellous contrast to that of any adjacent Asiatic nation. :

The development of Indian trade is not the chief good resulting from British rule, but it is adevelopnient easily measured, and therefore that can be readily pointed to as an illustration of the general pro- gress of India in paths of peace. At the beginning of the last century, before the British became the ruling power the country did not produce $500,000 a year of staples fer exportation. During the first three-quarters of a century of British rule, exports slowly rose to about $50,0900,- 600 in 1834. After that date the old ir- land duties and other restrictions on Indian trade were abolished, and trade increased enormously. In 1893-94 India sold te other countries $350,000,000 worth of strictly Indian produce, which the In- dian hesbandman had raised, and for which he was paid, and in that year the total trade of India, including exports and im- ports, exceeded $650,000,000. Lest some may fancy that this development of trade bas been due to ordinary reasons, the modern exploitation of the world by steam and commerce, it may be mentioned that the trade of China’s four hundred million people has in the same period developed to little over one-third that of India:

But trade isthe least of many benefits conferred on India by justice and honesty.

Sir,—On my return last fall from ‘the Canaiian Norehwest, of which I had a Jong personal experience, 1 ‘found that much might be done to divert the tide of emigration which flowed from: this Prov- ince to the United States to Western Can- ada. Therefore I took the matter up with the C. P. R. Company, who named mea very low rate for people who would desire to go into the Canadian Northwest to settle.. Since that time I have been dis- seminating intormation aad distributing

among the people of this country. The information given in the Government books and paraphlets I believe to be reli

able. The veracity of the testimony and letters of resident settlers as set forth in

the C, P. Railway matter no person can reasonably doubt. Prescient of the great future in store for that country west of Manitoba, I had no hesitation 1n organiz-

ing a colony to go and settle there. In

this matter I was succeeding very well un- ti] lately. But, Mr, Editor, Canada has many enemies, of which the most despic- able are those leeches that sap all they can out of the Government and return +o

the Eastern Provinces to disparage their cowatry and malign the Goverament out of which they have enriched themselves. A person posing as a North West mounted

policeman who returned to the Island. a few days ago has already done mdre_ to

undo the good I have been doing than any foreign enemy of our country would ‘do.

I resorted to no kind ; of subterfuge or cowardly device, but. simply told the people what I knew of the coun- try from experience, nor did [ attempt to pirsuade people who were satisfied and doing well to leave the Island; but those who were dissatisfied and contem- plating a move, I, as every - true Canadian who has the interest of his country at heart should do, urged them to em‘grate to our own Canadian Northwest, where I feel confident they will do better.

Now, Mr. Editor, I. feel that.it is my duty to bring this matter to the notice of our Government and others whose names have been maligned by this frontier-fed pessimist; and hope that the Governme:t and gentlemen whose names are eo slan- dered will see the necessity of refuting euch statements made by the enem:es of our country.
