' The ‘adjourned annual “meeting of the Charlottetown Young Men’s Christian As- Sociation, on Monday evening last, was fairly well attended. The chair was occu- pied by the President, John 7, Mellish, Esq. Following is a brief abstract of his report forthe year 1889 :—
1 | The operations of the Association were carried on during the year for the most part in thé usual manner. An excellent musical conM@tavas given last winter, at which a number of ladies and gentlemen assisted in a praiseworthy manner. “A new feature a course, or rather two courses, of lec- tures. on the evidences. cf Christianity, given in the Hall last summer.-by Professor Braden, of the United States. The lec- turer is a specialist, and much good fesult- ‘ed from his lectures. “The Sunday after- hoon meetings were suspended as usual for
some time in the warm . weather. A large quantity of religious — tracts ,Was distributed on board ships in
port during the summer months. . Thanks ‘are due to several of the city clergymen for assistance in conducting these meetings and ‘the weekly Bible Class. The attendance at the reading room during the year was large, the number of readers being on the increase. The receipts from the sale of | tickets during the year. amounted to $680. ,The repairs and alterationg made in the ‘Yeading room early last winter have ren- dered the apartment most . attractive and comfortable. We. have reason to be, proud of the “fact that we have the best-equipped reading room in the | Maritiie Provinces, the supply of reading woatter, both as regards quality and quan- | tity, being first-class in every respect. The yearly cost of this reading matter is over $200, and access to it is within the reach , ofanyone on payment of the very ‘small 'sum of $2 4 year, or less in some cases. The late Professor T. A. Lepage bequeathed a iValuable gift to the reading room during the year—the Encyclopedia Britannica in fifteen volumes. As it has been decided no ‘volume of this work shall be removed from ,the reading room, it will serve as a perma- nent reminder of a member whose death was sq deeply lamented, and will prove of valuable aid to all classes of readers. The room used as a gymnasium is still open, but at present there is no instructor. Me, R. M. Barratt has been at work the greater part of the year as permanent Secretary, Mr. Leigh having resigned, and is instant in season and gut of season in seeking to promote the welfare of the Association. It

Ebenezer School Examination, and Other Notes.
The semi-annual examination of Ebenezer j School, New Glasgow Road, took place on ithe 30th ult. There were present Rey. James McLennan and Mrs. McLeunan, Rev. Mr. 7Kirby, Mr. George Arthur, of Dalhousie. College, and some thirty local, visiturs, many of: whom were ladies, The pupils were examined thoroughly in the ‘taricus branches taught in the schools, and — their proficiency and good behavior were subjects of general re- mark by the visitors,
At the close of the examination a short entertainment’ was. given by the pupils, which-was very interesting, Up to this point the exercises: were: probably more in- teresting to the visitors than to the pupils, but now the conditions were reversed. Pleasant expectation, which gives so much Zest to juvenile life, was plainly to be seen upon fitty happy faces, as it was announced that the presents from the Christmas Tree would now bé distributed. In a few minutes kmd hands had stripped the tree of its hvliday attire, and the pupils were happy in the possession of their gifts, not one pupil present being overlooked. The rey. gentlemen then addressed the assem- blage in complimentary terms, and after sivging the National Anthem the meeting dispersed. ‘
it had been arranged to hold the above exercises on the 23rd ult., but owing to the sudden death of one of the pupils they were postponed for a week. The scholar whose death was so greatly regretted by his parents, teacher, fellow-pupils and many others, was Master Cyrus J, Boundy, son of Mr. John Roundy, one uf the Trustees of the School. He was a good boy and a bright scholar. Although only eleven years old, he was well advanced in all the sub- jects of Grade V., and was a general favor- ite with all his schoolmates on account of his unselfish nature and sunny temperament. His career on earth wag very brief; but who can say that his death may not have a greater influence for good, than even a long hfe would have. Dickens has somewhere said, in effect, ‘that nothing good and beautiful ever dies and is forgotten. The child of an hour, dying in its mother’s arms, lives again in the lives of those who loved it here; and that if every holy desire, and noble deed could be traced to its source, how many would be found to have had their growth in dusky graves.” - The parents have the sympathy! of their many friends in their bereavement.

This gentleman and his amiable partner are always to the front in every good word and work; and have, since their arrival here, won the respect and esteem of all who have had the pleasure of their ac- quaintance. The forthcoming election dues not seem to cause much commction in this locality. Probably the present tranquility is only the deceitful calm which usually precedes storm. No doubt in the seclusion of their homes, the politicians are manufacturing ammunition for the coming campaign. The post office established, here last spring is proving a great boon to the people, The amount of business done is surprising for so small aplace. Mr, Alex. | McCallum, the courteous and obliging post- master, gives entire satisfaction. Jan. 6, 1890. ‘ EBENEZER.

Last year 138,000 bundredweight from. the United States and 668,000 hundredweights from Canada was im- ported. This year the figures promise to he as large. :
Fyns ar Carpican: Briper.—The building occupied by Mr. William Minto, at Cardigan Bridge, as a shop and warehouse was destroyed by fire early on Tuesday momning, the 14th inst. When the alarm was given the fire had complete possession of the building, and no efforts could be used that wonld save the stock in it. The wind was blowing a gale from the north-west at the time, but fortu- nately no other buildings caught, although a warehouse owned by Mr. George F, Owen wes saved with difficulty. No cause can be given for the outbreak of this fire, as everything was all right a& 10 o’clock on Monday night. The building was insured for $400 in the Glas. gow and London Company, and the stock therc In for $2,000 in the Western and $1,500. - in the North British and Mercantile.
