A fresh advance in telephony has been made, says a Paris corraspoudert, by the invention of two new telephones which ar now c« mnanding the attention of scientific men. Uae is that of Captain Charoiles, ot the 115th jiue, and was tried recently at Toulouse, before the officers of the 17th Army Oorps. One of its peculiarities is that it is independent «f insulavors. It i small, of simple mechanism, can be mad: cheaply, and is easily set up. The receives can also be attached to the ear, thus enabi- ing persons in communication, without any break in the conversation, to write down what is said. The other telephone is pa‘ented by M. Mercadier, master of the head form at the Polytechnic School of Paris, He claims that perfect telephonic transmission dves not d: pend on the siz of the instrumen:,b ut on the intensity of the magnetic field and the diameter ana thickness of the diaphragm. His telephone only weighs a little under two ounces, whereat the one now in use weighs eight times as much. It has a diameter of less than three inches, gives a louder and clear- er sound than any now in use, and the re- ceiver can likewise be fastened on the ear. I's superiority has been tested on a tele- phonic line of 800 kiiometres, 75 of which were under ground.
