The Cry for Food.

Accorping to the London Times the wheat crop in England will fall below the average of the past five years both in quality and quanvtity. This is not a pleasant fact for the Old Country to ponder, when it remembers that the yield in recent seasons has been inferior to that of former years. In 1874 the wheat crop represented the yield of nearly a million acres more than that of 1°81. The reports from the countries of Europe show that the crops there will not be above the average, but are likely to prove below it. Consequently, there is likely to be a great demand for bread- stuffs, and a good prospect of American and Cavadian farmers getting good prices for their produce. The withdrawal of sv | many acres of English land from culti- vation is a very good index of the move- ments of the agricultural worker. Thousands of these are now leaving, and have left, Engiand, choosing to suffer the hardships of a pioneer life in the new world, rather than stay at home and suffer the slavish poverty of the English workiag agriculturist. This, while of supreme importance to the agricultural labourer, cannot but exert a baneful in- fluence on the agricultural prospects of the old country,

When The End Comes—What Then ?

ENGLAND is doing the Egyptian work alone. The European Powers neiiher approve vor entirely disapprove of what she is now doing. When she has com- pleted the work they will doubtless claim a voice in the settlement of the question. As things now stand, France looks on, while England incurs the odium, and the Frenchman will possibly pose bye and-bye as the friend of national aspira- tions. Germany remains neutral, and one ot the articles in her inspired organs, says :—*‘It is certain that Germany con siders neither her own interests nor European peace endangered by the events on the Nile. Nowhere is any in- tention shown to damage the German interests. The German Government cannot justify to the people any other policy than that which exclusively repre- sents German interests.” Austria is anxious to remain friendly to Turkey. The Austrian cannot forget that he may, one day, find himself forced into a deadly

struggle with the Russian; that revolu- |

tions are possible in Servia, Bulgaria, and the Balkan Provinces, and that soon the cry of “Liberty and Patriotism” may re-echo on his own berders. The friendship of Turkey will then be valuable. Russia will, of course, be the leading spirit in the final settlemeut, re-

PARTIAL elctions were held in Cape Breton and Antigonish Counties, N. S., on Tuesday. In Antigonish Mr. Charles Widden (Conservative) was returned by one of the largest majorities ever secured that County. The County of Cape 3reton, however, returned Mr. Alonza J. White, (Grit) the new Attorney General. The Hera/d in commenting on the return of a man like Mr. White tu the position of Attorney Gencral says :--‘‘ To provide—in response to piteous cries—Mr. A. J. White with the means of earning a livelihood may be a very generous act ; but to place such a man in charge of the legal business of this province for the next four years invol- ves alike disgrace and danger. How far the people of Cape Breton may yet share in that disgrace and danger remains to be seen.”

The Turks, requir- ing supplies, were obliged to pass through part of Greek territory; they were opposed and fired upon by the Greeks and retaliated, driving cff the latter.
