USING AN OLD DRUG IN TREATMENT OF. ALCOHOLISM All over the world today there is determined effort on the part of thoughtful people to try to cure ulcoholism. Just as many are de- termined to find the cure for cancer and a method of preventing heart disease.

The method of Alcoholics An- onymous, with its 12 steps. includ- ing the daily prayer to a Higher Power to be kept free from alcohol for just. one day. is the - ideal method of fighting alcoholism. However, there are cases where other forms of treatment are need- ed to keep the alcoholic free from the habit.

For many years institutions which specialized in the treatment of alcoholism used drugs which caused severe nausea and vimiting when alcohol was used; the alco- ho& finally found that he would sooner do without alcohol than undergo these terrible symptoms.

For cases where the alcoholic dislikes the idea of joining Alco- holics Anonymous, newer drugs. including Antabuse. are giving ex- cellent results.

A former popular drug which works scr.-newhat along the lines ri'

from ooium. In the Swiss Medical Journal. Drs. G. de Morcier and H. Feldrnan report their results in treatment of 150 chronic alcoholics. 126 men and 24 Women. with apo- morphine. Treatment consisted of an injection of apomorphlno every two hours. day and night. with the patient placed in an isolation room (without food) and given his favorite alcoholic bcvcraxe. Trelli- ment was started with a 6 mg. apo- morphine. the dose was reduced to 5 mg. when he began to vomit. Treatment was continued with this dost-..unlil n rrnnpletc repugnance in the alcoholic beverage appeared. Treatment was continued with doses of 4 mg. then 3. and then 2 every six hours. Then ten units of insulin was injected and patient given a big meal. Patients follow- ed showed that 69 (46 per cent) made a complete recovery.

Combine the mushroom soup and toasted almonds. Trim all crusts from bread slices.
