THE necessity of keeping firearms out of the reach of mischievous boys was made pain- fully evident on Saturday last. A boy named James Lawlor, son of Mr. Lawlor, laborer, was seriously and almost fatally shot, while he, witha number of others, were playing with a loaded pistol The facts, as fat as we can learn. are: Young Lawlor, who is about twelve years of age went to Belvidere Woods with a half dozen others of his own size. They had with them a pistol and ammunition and they ranged the woods to their own amusement. At Beer's Creek they rested and while comparing notes the pistol went off accidently, and part of its contents entered the abdomen of young Lawlor. He was removed to his home, and Dr. Beer was called in attendance. The doctor succeeded in extracting some of the buckshot, but a number still remain in serivus positions, and om unfortanate boy lies in a critical con-

Tue breakwater jast completed at Indian Poivt, at the entrance of Summerside Harbor, was thoroughly tested on the 22nd inst. On the eveniny of that date a flood-tide arose and a Strong southwest wind prevails d. A large quantity of Guill ice was carried into Summer- side harbor and the current directed a portion of it t ywards the breakwater, which protects Indian Poiat lighthouse. When the tide arose full height, the ice was carried upon the breakwater and threatened its destruction; but the work stood the test admirably, and notwithstandinz the fact that over twenty feet of ice was piled upon it, the breakwater was but slightly injored. The breakwater 15 situated at the southwest side of the light- house. It is four feet above high water mark, and is one handred and forty feet long. It was built on the recommendation of Mr- Lord, agent of the Marne and Fishery Depart- ment, and was eompleted by Mr. Ronald Campbell, Contractor, on t'e 7th inst., but has not vet been taken over by the Depart- ment. The value of the work is shown by the fact that had there been no breakwater at Indian Point on the 22nd inst., the lighthouse would hive been destreyed. A very simple method and an improvement upon the Rafey system of training vicious horses was, says the Rural Canadian, ex- hibited at West Philadelphia recently, and the manner in which some of the wildest | horses were subdued was astonishing. The | first trial was made on a kicking or ‘‘balking ’ mare, which her owrer said had allowed no rider on her back for at least five years. She became tame in about as many minutes, and allowece herself to be ridden about without a sign ef her former wildness. The means by which the result was accomplished was a piece of light rope, which was passed around the front jaw ofthe mare just above the front tecth, crossed in her mouth, thence secured back of her neck. It was claimed that no horse will kick or jamp when thus secured, aud that a horse alter receiving that treat- ment afew times will abandon his. vicious way forever. A very simple method was also shown by which a kicking horse could be shod. It consisted of connecting the animal’s head and tail by means of a rope fastened to the tail and then to the bit, and then draw tightly enough te incline the animal’s head to one side. This, it is claimed, makes it abso- lutely impossible for a horse to kick on the side of the rope. Atthe same exhib‘ion a herse, which for years had to be bound oa the yround to be shod, suffered the blacksmith to operate on him without attempting to kick while secured in the manner described.

Natal Day.

Tue Independent Order of Oddfellows of this city and Summerside, celebrated the anniversary of the foundation of the Order to-day by a procession and a service in the Methodist Church, The members of Wildey, Prince Eijward, St. Lawrence, and Port La Joie Encampment, assembled at St. Lawrence Lodge Rooms, Queen Street, at 2 o'clock, and formed a pro- cession headed by the hand of the 82nd Battalion, marched to Church, where an appropriate service was held, and Rev. J. W. Wadman preached an eloquent sermon, taking for his text the Ist verse of the exxiii. Psalm: “Behold how good and pleasant a thing it is for brethern to dwell tegether in nnity.” é

At the conclusion of service, the proces- sion was re-formed as follows :—

Band of the 82nd Battalion. Wildey Lodge. Prince Edward Lodge, Summerside. St. Lawrence Lodge. Pert La Joie Encampment.

Ths members wore handsome regalias, and the elaborate banners of the different lodges looked exceedingly well, and the procession presented a very creditable ap- pearance. After parading the different streets, they returned to St. Lawrence Lodge Room and dispersed.

To night, the celebration will be con- cluded by a grand entertainment in Market Hall, for which extensive preparations have been made.

The authorities in Swansea, Wales, are attempting tu induce the Government to gend the American mails by way of Swan- sea instead of through Liverpool and Queenstown, as at present. At a@ recent meeting of the Swansea Harbor Trust, Sir Hussey Vivian stated that representations had been made to the Government which showed that during the last six months | thirty-six steamers had left Swansea for 'New York. Dying of Thirst.

Advices from western Texas are to the effect that the cattle are suffering, and large numbers dying, for want of water and grass, the drought having ‘been very severe in that section. Myriads of caterpillars nave also appeared, and- are destroying all kinds of vegetables.
