Beatty scored a total of 108 out at a pouible zoo and in doing so won two of the four matches fired vruerday. The veteran riflcman won the Prowse Bros. and the Moore and Macleod Matches with possible scores of 60.

In winning the Moore and Male- Leod match he -was forced to shoot-off with Miss Elsie strong and Grir. W. E. Hardy who also posted possible-scores.

There can be little doubt as in what prompted Col. Oland to step into the background in the hockey picture. Last winter he stated that his hockey ambition was to bring Halifax a Maritime cham- pionship team. He put plenty of energy and money into such an undertaking last season only to see his team fail on the last hur- dle. How much money he invested in the team is something that few know but it is a safe,bet that ri considerable amount of it never returned.

A smart and successful business man, Col.0land knew that he was not receiving in value in propor- tion to that which he was paying out. His players were the best equipped and best looked after in the league. When they went on road trips they lived only in the best hotels-. It is also known that some took advantage of his good treatment in a manner which could hardly be called commend- able. . O O O

In his three years in the hockey picture Col.0iand provided count- less thousands of fans throughout the Maritimes with hours of good winter entertainment. His teams usually gave crowd-pleasing per- formances although they did come here understaffed several times during the 1950-51 season. This was due to the fact. however, that several of his players were college students.

It came as something of a sur- prise to us to hear that the man who backed the hallfax Saints for the past three years would get out of the hockey bminess especially after he had framed the plans for the operation of a league next I year. In addition to that he stated

Harry Matthews, the pride of the great northwest, with two crunch- ing left hooks to the jaw tonight to score a spectacular knockout will in 2:04 of the second round at Yankee Stadium.

The 29-year-old Matthews, from Seattle, unbeaten since 1943. were a bewildcred expression on his pain- drawn face as he went down with his head against the ropes.

Gamely trying to gather his numbed senses, Matthews clawed at the ropes as he tried to pull hun- self off the-deck. As the west coast fighter started to rise, he collapsed over the bottom strand like a wet rag. Referee Ray Miller tolled on the final 10.

Weaving low in a Jack Dempsey- style attack, the pride of Brockton, Mass.. drove to the attack from the opening bell. A scowlirlg slug- ger, with mouth agape, the Drawny son of it shoemaker beat a crush- ing attack on -vlatthews' jaw.

With an 81.l-pound advantage in the weights, Marciano bulled the counter-punching Matthews around the ring with his wild, but numbing punches.

Hurleyi shouted long and loud that his fighter was being ignored by the New York promoters until they finally gave him his big chance. In his only previous New York appearance he dazzled the fans by whipping Irish Bob Mur- liihy.

Slow in arriving. the crowd was estimated at about 25.000 by the time the main bout started.

HELSINKI, July 28-(CF)--The comparative tranquility of the 1952 Olympic Games was broken today when a riot erupted at the end of the Uruguay-France bask- etball match and the American referee was painfully injured.

In contrast, the heralded meet- ing between the United States team and Russials European championship was a friendly af- fair, the Americans overpowering the Russians B6-58.

Two of Canada's boxers won first-round victories, two swim- mers qualified for the 400-metre semi-final but the best the cano- ers could do was an eighth and a ninth places
