(By Taylor Henry, Associated Press Staff Writer) PARIS, Sept. 25—(AP)—The French announced to- . night they had defeated a German airfleet in two major air battles over the western front.

The battles were fought Sunday as a preliminary to the pounding of Germnay’s mighty Siegfried forts from one end of the western front to the other by French heavy artillery which opened up today.

The French said “superior numbers” of German planes were defeated in two distinct fights. The French admitted they lo i. two planes, but said they were certain the Ger- mans ost a greater number despite their superior

The French pilot of one plane shot down by the Ger- mans parachuted safely and returned to his squadron headquarters.

German People Warned Access To Raw Materials Cut Off—Britisl1 Airforce Demonstrates Power.

LONDON, Sept. 25—(CP Cable)—Great Britain io- night marshallcd her vast economic resources to restrict German purchases in neutral countries as the Government told the people of the Reich that their access to raw mu- terials “'11s cut off.

The Government conveyed its warning to the German people in pamphlets dropped by Royal Air Force planes in weekend flights over Germany.

“The British and French fleets have swept German merchant shipping from the oceans,” the pamphlets told Germans. “You can no longer rely as you did in the last war upon neutral supplies because your Government cannot pay for them.”

A translation of the leaflet added that Germany! supplies of essential war materialswere vanishing with- out means 0f renewal and “night after night the British air force has demonstrated its power by flights far into German territory.”

Great Britain, it was learned, is negotiating a series of war trade agreements with neutral countries to restrict German purchases of materials essential to her war effort.

Negotiations already have started in countries comprising the "Oslo group" and in the Balkan States. The "Oslo group" comprises the Scandinavian countries, The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.

The Government turned also today to the twin problems of muni- tions and supply. The Prime Minister and his ministers of supply and labor, Leslie Burgln and Ernest Brown, talked with Clement Attiec and Arthur Greenwood.
