During a fifteen-year per- iod in one Lcsl. a fertilized past- .urc field produced over 15,000 pounds of green herbage per acre per year, while I comparable un- ifcrtiiized field produced 2450 lbs. In addition to the difference in yield. the protein content of the herbage from the fertilized field ,iiaa more than twice that of the herbage from the unfertilized pas- ture. Fertilizer has therefore pro- duced a large increase in herbage iyicld and a large increase in her- ibagc quality as measured by pro- ytcin content. This increase was broiiglit about ibr applying the equivalent of 500 lpounds of a 3-8-3 mixture each year. Larger yields than the one 'quoted above have been obtained with heavier applications of coin- im e r c l a l fertilizer. Expcricnt-e ;shows that applications of 300 to H500 pounds per acre per year of id-12-6 will give profitable returns -in lncreas yield of herbage. We cannot have the right kind of homes unless we ha e standards regarding marriage an funiiy life to which we feel ourselves unalter- ably committed. We cannot main- tain respect for personality unless we have a code. of decency Hid honor in the relation between the sexes that we consider as sacred as life itself. If we are going to do right by the rising generation more must be an effort to maintain some sense of discipline and enforce some restraints. Take any sphere you like in which there has been and is the exercise of too much bi-oadmindedness and you will find that the parties responsible have gone way beyond the place one would normally have expected them to draw a line. And. if there is to be anything worthy about life at all. a line must be drawn some- where, and every time before things have gone too far.

Btrlnse thing about almost anyone of these very broldmlnded people. and that is how narrow minded and intolerant they can be when it comes to the opinions of the peo- ple who disagree with them. They have no patience whatever with people who insist on drawing a line and setting up standards.

Yet. how reluctant they are to concede any rights to those who see things from the viewpoint of the larger good of eociety as a whole. Their myopic way of looking at things is shockingly distorted. On serious reflection one.haa little difficulty in understanding why some people indignantly protest be- ing called broadminded. We need this quality in the right propor- tions and in.t.he right places. but we have entirely too much of the

minded that we accept everything as of equal worth.

There is. however. one very

extravagant use of it today. and

that is bringing the whole business. of being broadminded in disrepute.
