Mr. Croskitt, the popular young Secretary of Superintendent Coleman, and his bride, arrived here about half-past nine o'clock last evening. Starr Caprain’ Herpert, Divisional Olficer of the Gospel Army, will leave Calais for Charlottetown, on Wednesday next, ami will (D. V.) arrive here on Thursday evening and remain a few days. Daring her stay she will give a sketch of the organization and work of the Gospel Army. Miss Herbert came out from Lon don, England, in September last, and while here has met with wonderful success in establishing the Army both in Canada and the States.

Freperick McLean, a young man be- longing to Dog River, has fallen a victim to religious hallucination. It appears that the excitement of attending the meetings of the rival Gospel and Salva- tion Armies was too much for poor Me Lean, and this morning he resolved hiw- self into a miniature army, marching up and down Queen Street singing and whist- ling .snatches of popular Army hymna, proclaiming himself king of kings, ete. He was taken in charge by the police and conveyed to the station where he is at present. He will, we are informed, be kept closely confined for a few days, when it is hoped that freedom from ex- citemeat, ete , will restore his reason.

From Messrs. Saxon & Co, of London, we have received acopy of the authorized translation of Flaubert’s Salammbo, by Mr. F. Sheldon, a French scholar of high re- pute, who has sncceeded in presenting the great novel in a striking and brilliant man- ner. Mr. Sheldon’s translation ig a very spirited and faithful performance, sustain ing intact every beauty of the original, and furnishiag a narrative which awakens the keenest interest and sympathy. The

story itself is ons of the grandest ever | Called at the house where his wife was and 4 bold, | asked to see her. full of color and fervid imagination, and | gether Reid pulled out a revolver and fired

written. It is realistic and underlying the whole there is a rich vein of philosophy. In_ form artistic and may easily rank first in a very brilliant school of fiction. It is a powerful romance in every sense, and its intensely dramatic manner emphasizes it- self on almost every page. No one can read it without being fully impressed with its grandeur and force. All the point and spirit and character of the novel fiud full expression in the admirable translation which Mr. Sheldon has pro- duced. His version does not read at all like « translation, but rather resembles a strong story written by a vigorous Eng- lish pen. The romance itself is a master- piece. The translation is equally brilliant. Copies may be had through the Dawsons.

The Situation in Ireland. Lonvon, May 7. The Daily Telegraph saya the Orange Societies thoonghout, Ulster continue their preparations for fighting. Promises of help have been received from England, Scot-

land and the Cojonies. It is alleged that 100,000 troops can be raised in Ireland.

Michael Davitt has written a letter to the Daily News, in which he says that the difference between Chamberlain and Glad- stone being irreconcilable, the proposals of the latter are acceptable to Irishmen, while those of the former are not accept- able. If Chamberlain's proposals prevail, the struggle will continue to intensify. If the Irish representatives sit at Westminster there will be constant friction of two evile—- paying tribute and sitting at Westminster. It is better to choose the former, which is the lesser evil. By a stroke of genius inspired by the angel of peace, Gladstons has recognized the Irish National idea and it is to be sincerely hoped that he will not give way to Chamberlain.

Burglary.

This morning when Messrs Sutherland and Creaghan and James Fish’s stores were opened, it was found that they had been burglarized. A large amount of money is missing from the safes. A man registered at the Waverly as J. C. Ball, of St. John was arrested on suspicion, haying abuut $1,900 in his possession.

A Schooner Seized. Dicey, N. 8., May 7.

The Government steamer Lansdowne to day ordered off the schooner David J. Adams, of Gloucester, Mass., which was illegally trespassing in Canadian waters. The schooner, it is reported, refused to comply with the warning, and was there- upon seized by the Lansdowne.

An Agitator Arrested. Cuicaco, May 7. William Stahlknecht, President of the Cabinet Makers’ Union, also professional agitator, was arrested at an early hour this morning, accused of intimidating workmen.
