A Pera correspondent says Savet Pashaf is preparing a circular stating that the Bul- garians are systematically endeavoring to extirpate the Musslemans.
Wim. Horne, a cooper belonging to Lon- don, but for some time past working at Oil City, Pa., was killed on the cars forty miles east of Buffalo, while e route homewards.
Safvet Pasha, Grand Vizier, gave a grand dinner at his summer residence on the Bos- phorus in honor of Prince Labenoff, the Russian Ambassador to Constantinople.
Another party of forty left Ottawa yes- terday morning, bound for Manitoba. They are agriculturalists, who go up to lo- cate land with the intention of settling.
It is reported from Antivari that Austriz. has proposed a compromise, according to which Montenegro would have the use but not complete possession of the port of An- tivari.
An order for reduction of work on the Great Western Railway has caused the stop- page of the car works at London for one day in the week. Further reductions are expected.
The mobilization of Austrian troops, is at present, confined to those in Slavonia and South Dalmatia, where two divisions have been placed on a war footing, and to Tran- sylvania.
The Empress of Russia’s fever and in- flammation are subsiding, but her rest is disturbed. She does not gain strength. Public prayers have been offered in all the churches for her recovery.
A Berlin special says, on his arrival here, Prince Gortschakoff was exceedingly pale. He was wrapped in thick furs, and had to be carried from the train to his carriage by his attendants. His condition causes some apprehension.
Poetic fans are coming into fashion in Paris. At the ball given by the Princess de Sagan to the Prince and Princess of Wales, the hostess presented each lady in the cotillion with a fan inscribed with a few verses of poetry.
The Bersaglieri, a Liberal newspaper pub- lished at Rome, stated yesterday that the Pope had had a protracted fainting fit, but the Osservatore Romano officially states that the Pope health is excellent, and a despatch says the story is unfounded.
Mrs. William Waldorf Astor wore, at her wedding at Philadelphia on Thursday, white satin and tulle, and a magnificent diamond necklace, the worth of which is startlingly stated in the fashion reports at $500,000. It was the gift of Mrs. J. J. Astor.
A Berlin correspondent says Congress will probably sit on alternate days, each sitting to occupy about three hours. The first subjects to be considered will probably be the degree of secresy to be observed, and the military position at and near Constanti- nople.
George Rignold, the actor, has been robbed many times, and gained an amount of advertising that was cheap at the cost. Now his servant has taken a box of his valuables from a hotel in Denver, and run away; but this time the loss amounts to about $2,000.
A Cattaro despatch says, in the event of the failure of negotiations at Scutari for the adjustment of the frontier differances with Montenegro, the Turks fear an offensive move against Podgoritza, as the Prince of Montenegro has posted a brigade in that direction, apparently to exercise pressure upon the negotiations.

on board the City of Brussels, of the Inmam line, last evening. Postmaster James, Rete Dr. Patton, Excise Commissioner Patter= son, and other prominent gentlemen were present. Col. Shaw has engaged passage om the City of Brussels, which is to sail fog Liverpool on July 22nd.
_ Major-Gen Brinton, the officer who wag in command of the troops at Pittsburg im July last, when a hasty volley killed thirtp or forty citizens and led to the destructiom of millions of dollars worth of property, has resigned. The popular antipathy has proved too strong for him, and he seek oblivion in private life. It is believed thet other resignations will follow.
Shortly before the death of Cruikshank, one of his letters brought a large sum at @ sale of autographs. One of the artist’s friends met him the same evening and tol& him about it. ‘‘ Well! there are sill people in the world,” he exclaimed ; ‘ wish, however, they would come to me, an@ I would sit down and write letters all dag for half the money.”
At the General Sessions at London, Ont., on Saturday last, James Ward was sentence:§ to three years’ Imprisonment in the Peni- tentiary for biting the nose off George W. Dale at a boarding shanty at the Watet Works Reservoir. Daniel Kelly, who were convicted of assist« ing Ward in the assault, were sentenced to six months in the Central Prison.
No American lady of the day leads se brilliant a life as Madame Waddington, wife of the French Minister of Foreign Affairs. A strange combination of nationalities this family presents. He is of naturalized British parents, was educated under Arnold at Rugby, and rowed in the Trinity eight at Cambridge; his wife is daughter of the late President King of Columbia College.
A German physician who was a classmate of Bismarck at the University of Bonn, says that even at that early age he gave evidences of the tact, shrewdness and diplomatic qual- ities for which he is now famous. In his oral intercourse and in his correspondence with absent friends he seemed incapable .of committing himself rashly on any subject. He never parted with a manuscript without carefully revising it, and once, when rallied on his caution, rejoined: ‘‘It is no credit to be right where it would be inexcusable to be wrong.”
That delightfully just journal, the Ham- ilton Times, thinks the Tories have no ec- casion to be shocked at Majaw Walker's bribery and corruption, for, it asks : ‘‘Who is their candidate in North Wentworth ?” and then answers the querry : ‘‘ Mr. Thos. Stock, a man who, like Mr. Walker, was disqualified for violating the law, and whose disqualification was only removed by the grace of the Ontario Legislatu~e.” Mr. Stock was disqualified for drinking a glass of beer, unconscious that he was violating the law ; the Majaw bribed with open hand, dealing liberally to all men. | This is the kind of argument indulged in by Grit jour- nalists with a bad case.
Montreal Star says: ‘‘A boot and shoe nachine which was being sold in the United States at $500, was commenced to be manu- factured here by one of our machine comp- panies, with the price of the American ma- chine for Canada ran gradually down till it was delivered here duty paid for $208. The Canadian manufactvrer could not stand the competition, gave up the manufacture and the price of the machine, is on the up- ward march once more, and now cannot be had for less than $300. Undersell, kill off competition and the Canadian market is at ovr mercy. Such is the Yankee doctrine in every branch of manufacture. 1t pays them, too; but it is death to us.
Ex-King George of Hanover, died at Brussels. The dead King was Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale in Great Brit- ain, Earl of Armagh in Ireland, Knight of the Garter and first cousin to Her Majesty Queen Victoria. He was the only son ef the late King Ernest, known in Great Brit- ain as the Duke of Cumberland, and was born at Berlin May 27th, 1819. The Duke of Cumberland ascended the throne of Han- over upon the death of King William IV. of England on June 20th, 1837, when by the Salic Jaw the two kingdoms were dis- united, and was succeeded on his death, No- vember 18th, 1851, by his son, now de- ceased, who became George V. The late ex-King, though entirely blind, was an ex- cellent musician. In 1866 he took part with Austria in the German war, and his terri- tories were occupied by the Prussians early in June. On September 20th, in the same year, they were annexed to Prussia by de- cree.
A Vienna correspondent telegraphs : It is said that the Porte does not intend to make a stand against a declaration of the inde- pendence of Roumania, Servia, or Monte- negro’s. It would, if unavoidable, consent to Montenegro’s receiving the extension of territory proposed by the Constantinople Conference, and probably would not seri- ously contest Servia’s claim to an extension on the right bank of the Moravia. It seems all Turkey’s efforts are to be concentrated on saving a8 much as possible of Northern Bulgaria. It will claim that that portion of country east of the Lom should be left under the direct rule of the Porte, as the Mohammedans are in a majority. If this appeal fail, it will endeavor to obtain an or- ganizations for Bulgaria similar to that of Lebanon. In regard to Asia, the Turks will plead that Russia’s possession of Kars would leave a great part of the country de- fenceless, and the nationalities about Ba. towm oppose annexation to Russia,
