Fellow Students:

Well, it is that time of the year again when you are called upon to vote for your representatives for next year’s Student Union and Union Executive. My name is Bill MacMillan and I am one of the can- didates for Vice President Academic.

The Vice President Academic’s job is a difficulut one which in- volves total commitment and responsibility. This person's duties include some of the following:

- serving on the Senate

- supervising of the newspaper

and yearbook

- communicating with all sub-

organizations on academic issues

- undertaking any research for the Student Union that is deem- ed necessary by the students

- and other duties as required.

This coming election has been ‘on my mind since the beginning of the semester. I wondered whether or not I should run for this position since it requires absolute commit- ment. I have committed myself 100% to this position. | know that I can do this job and do it well.

After a couple of weeks of serious contemplation and con- sultation with several colleagues, | decided to let my name stand for the position of Vice President Academic in the STUDENT UNION elections next week.

For those of you who don't know me, I am a third year Arts student majoring in Canadian Studies/Political Studies. 1 presently sit as a student represen- tative on the University Senate as well as serving on the U.P.E.I.S.U. Council..1 am a member of three Senate committees, Nominations, Promotions and Academic Plann- ing, as well as serving on the Academic Review Committee, a sub committee of Academic Plann- ing. I feel this experience would be invaluable in fulfilling the position of V.P. Academic.

Being involved in both student Council and Senate, | have a heightened awareness of the duties in issues that follow this position. And while I believe that it is impor- tant to maintain several policies from years past, | feel there should be some changes in key issues in

the coming year. There. are two areas under research that I would develop if elected. The first is as a result of the lack of any systematic:and consis~ tent process of course and teachers evaluations. At the present time, a small number of professors, on their own initiative, administer these evaluations. I believe that students have the right to have ‘ongoing input into what is being taught to them and who is teaching. In the case of inaction by the university administration, we, the students should look to imple- ment these evaluations ourselves. The second area concerns the direction of post-secondary educa- tion, both universally and within ‘our own university. It is important that students, by discussing this issue, have a method of input at every level of decision-making. This past year, we saw the im- plementation of the new sub- organization policy. Action in this area should be two-fold. First, make sure that all potential organizations on campus register at the Student Union and second, in- crease the lines of communication between Council and these

organizations. I. feel very strongly that The Gem should become more localiz- ed and diversified, thereby better serving the whole university com- munity, while maintaining the high level of professionalism established this year. . A major item . of contention

every year on campus is our year- book. Inevitably, there are a number of students disgruntled by what they receive (and when they receive it.) To solve this problem to some degree, I think it is necessary that all students have the chance to increase their input into the pro- cess.

I urge students to attend the general meeting which will be held in the Library Lounge at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday March 11, 1986 to hear the speeches of the candidates and the reports of the outgoing Executive. All of this effects you, the student, and the time you spend here at U.P.E.I. Last, but not least, I would like to congratulate the outgoing Vice President Academic, Carolyn Ryan, on a job well done and I wish her all the best in future years.
