Westerners at. the Geneva con- ference are experiencing a new. warmer treatment by Russia's chief delegate. They talk about it as "Molotov mellowness."

It may be true that Soviet For- eign Minister V. M Molotov is mellowing with age. He has been making motions and saying things that might indicate he is shed- ding some of the cold stnniness for which he is noted: and that he really is having it worrisome time keeping his allies——Rerl China‘ and the lncirv-Chinese rebel \'ietminh— in line.

Some experts. however. say they tee a real threat in the new Mol- .iln\' line and fear elements in the western camp will be taken in. They also are watching closely to see if it is a screen to hide new Fommunist aggression.

All this week. Molotov has been smiling at people in private ex- changes with members of other delegations he has been at times gentle and philosophical in tone.
