A Scandal on the Sex.

Adry goeds salesman says :—We have io endure a great deal at the hands ef those ladies that never buy. These people take up valuable time,and a good part of our energies is directed to the effort to cireumyent them. The mo- ment an,“old timer” comes up to the counter she is instantly recognized by some of the salesmev, and the warning signal, a tap on the counter, is passed aloug the line. Then we have some fun. The “old timer” will call for, say, a cer tain shade of yellow. She istoldit is pot in stock. “Ob, whata pity!” she exclaims, “that is just what I wanted. Jf you had it I would buy sixteen yards of it.” Then itis the next man’s turn. He comes in aceordingly, and tells the first salesman that he is mistaken, that there is a bolt of twentv yards of that identical stuff in the store. He brings itforward and lays it down. You would think the shopper who never buys would be disconcerted at this turn of affairs. Notabit of it. She says smiliogly :—“Oh that is just what I want. Lay it aside for me, and I will see my dressmaker and find out just bow many yards sho needs, and to-morrow Tli come back and buy it.” Then she departs with asimper, but she never comes back. We amuse ourselves in way, but it’s a terrible nuisance all the same.

Incidents of the Crisis.}

The New York World thus comments on an incident in the events of Blaek Wednesday; “There was a lively run on the second naticnal bank, but the doors werenot closed. This bank had a wealthy father. The president, young Jamea ©. Eno, squandered in the neigh- borhood of $4,000,000 in wild specula- tions. The bank was in atight plaee. Not one of theeminently respeetable. but high- ly somnolent and ornamental directors knew that the funds of the bank were being misdirected until the denouement came. it had been going on for months and the directors met and nosed the books and papers every day. When the inevitable hour arrived, Amos R. Eno, father of the president, amiably handed over $3,500,000 for the relief of the bank and the directors raised an other half million. Eno pere is worth $20,000,000, and he sat in the bank and toid the excited depositors to come on. He said he was good for a million a day for something like a fortnight. This Roman father performance saved the bank, but what is tc be said of the directors and other officials ot the insti- tution who slept while the presideat gambled away the deposits of the trust- ful customers?

High Pressure in the Schools.

Inan article in the Fortnightly Re- view, Earl De La Warr dwells at some length upon the crying evil of high pressure in the schools. He shows from a mass of medical and other evidence that ,it is unjust to scholars and teach- ers. A strange feature of the case he makes out, however, is thai relating to the children of the miserably poor. Statistics seem to have been compiled— and they have a cold-bleoded look— which prove that in certain districts in London forty per cent. of the children come to school sometimes without breakfast, and twenty-eight per cent. sometimes without dinner. La Warr puts the case lightly when he says that educational overpressure in such cases ‘amounts almostto a crime.’
