Few plants have withstood the rise and fall ;)( garden popularity so well. These patted "ladies' ear-drops" o.r -"bleeding-liearts" aregas old fash- ioned as g-a.rden.s. Native to tropical America, with a few species from New zealand. they were introduced into England from Chile about 1730. There were 540 species and ml,-xi-ids recorded in 1848. whereas today there are weil over 2000 named varieties. .
The fuschla was named for the great German botanist. Leonard Fuchs, of the sixteenth century. Most of our garden forms have come from Fuschia niagellanica, a small- iiowered species. with the original fuschia color of blue petals and red calyx lobes. Its variety Glnbosa is available today. Known as little Jowei, it is a. very bushy plant, with tiny bells which completely cover the fine foliage from early spring until the short days of December. The variegated form is a. very attractive foliage plant.

To every real gardener. many plants have a special significance. The fuschlas growing on our west terrace and in our northwest win- dow boxes were a veritable part of my childhood. They attracted the bumblebee: and butterflies, and humming birds would come also to sip the nectar from the multi- colored. tubular bells. The plants were grown from year to year. iii- rreasing in size and vigor. Early in the spring they were brought from their winter quarters, potted in fresh soil and pruned. They do well in shade and need a good it-al of moisture. They will also in well in fuil sun especially the itnglo varieties.

The gardens of Victoria, British Columbia. have distinctive year- round beauty. There is a quality about the gardens that catches the eye of many visitors. This is no: surprising. for Victoria is known as the City of Gardens. its famous Butch:-1rt's Gardens. colorful flower gardens, public rose gardens. and in' particular its annual spring Garden Festival featuring the opening to the pubic of many of its finest private gardens. are well- known features of the City.
There are several factors that contribute to the character of these gardens. Victoria is favored by climatic conditions tin common with the coastal parts of Oregon. Washington. and southern British Columbia) that are conducive to good gardening and the use of a wide range of plant material sur- passed by few parts of the world.
The period of bloom for plants of a given species and the length and continuity of the flowering season throughout the year are surpassed by few places in the world; parts of New Zcaland ate probably the only exception.
Because of Victoria's proximity to the international border, and its predominately English background, its gardens reflect the best features of both British and American traditions. From Britain comes a natural love of gardening and flowers in particular. The English perennial borders of Victoria, and its rock-studded sea-side rock and alpine gardens are a joy to behold
Gardening is a genuine iii- terest of most of the people of Victoria. Home-owners who are not only amateur gardeners, but genuine plnnlsmen, exhibit a skill- ful blcnding of a wide range of plant material. This material in- cludes not only the usual run of ev- crgreens (chieftly conifers. in limit- ed range of variety. size. shape. and color-whose use has been so great- ly overdone). but licrbace-oils flow- ers. and many fine dwarf trees and shrulxs-both deciduous and evergreen. This is one of the feat- ures that attracts many Americans each year to the Spring Garden Festival in Victoria.
it is somewhat difficult to iii- dicate the general cliaracter of these gardens in a single paragraph, but there is no real off season in those that attract the most ad- miration. If Nature has produced an undulating, rocky liomesite. the gardens usually carry on from whcrs Nature left off, supplement- ing the natural beauty rather titan replacing it. with something else.
Rockeries may have their alpine plants, but there is usually a. basic planting of dwarf evergreens. Coizoneasters. Daphnt-s, Heathers. and other dwarf shrubs.
The value of dwarf shrubs in the evergreens, and true conifers In harticular, for rocky sites, is not generally appreciated.
Their annual growth is so slow that once a site is designed and planted, its a.ppea.i'ance can tic depended upon to be preserved for litany years in much of its original form. For general garden use. P18-nil attractive in flower, fruit. and foliage are preferred, with flowering evergreens being giver. high priority. Those that are at- tractlve throughout the winter months are also desired. The Cotoneasters and Flrethnrns (Pyr- ncnntha) and others with colorful fruit are given special consider- ation. all doing particularly well in the Northwest. It can generally be said that the gardens that are designed to be attractive through the winter months are also attract- ive the rest of the year. Heathers are widely used. in a range of species and varieties that bloom iliroughoiit the year. Particular interest is shown in the winter- blooming Heaths.
In the spring the Rhododend- rons. Azaleas. Flowering Cherries, Hawthm-ns. Crabapples, and the Japanese Apricot hold away with Forget-me-hots tMyoeotls) spring bulbs, Wallflowers. and Polyan- thus. and to a loser extent. Pan- sine and Stocks. These are at their peak during the Spring Gard- en Festival the first week in May. Lavender. Roses, sweet Pens. and all the fragrant flowers and herbs for which England is noted, are at their peak in late June.
Through careful basal planting around the house. thong trees, shrubs. and flowers blend the house and the garden into one harm- niiious unit. Harmony and design in the garden may not always my lup to the standard of the pro- ifccslonal landscape man. but the !material used reflects to a lnrgr lfIORl't'f! the character and prefer- ence of the owners. most loved residents, Alice Rose Matheson, widow of the late William Matheson.
The late Mrs. Matheson although advanced in years had retained a keen interest in the home, the neighborhood and Church espe- cially in home and foreign Missions. Those who were privileged to be acquainted with the late Mrs. Matheson realize the earth is poorer because of the home- golng of this christian mother who could be justly called ”one of the great mothers in Israel." Few of God's Saints have exemplified the new life in Christ by producing the unmistakable fruits of the spirit as did the late Mrs. Matheson. one could not be in her presence for long before being made fully aware of her love for the Saviour. and her great Missionary zeal, that thedews. God's ancient people, as she would say. and Gentiles to the ends of the earth might comcl to know personally her true friend.l her constant companion, her loving Saviour.
Death for the late Mrs, Matheson was not shmuded with unsolvablc mystery and its issues with un- certainty, but with her to be absent from the body would be present with the Lord.
The deceased was born at Car- digan P. E. Island, 1863, and was the llth child of a family of 13. The parents. Donald Mathrson and his wife Barbara tMacLellan) Mathesion were of the early SC'Jit'll pioneer settlers in that Community, only one sister survives namely. Mrs. W. M. Galbraith of Prince Albert, Sask. l
The late Mrs. Mathesoii was; married 63 years ago to William Mather-ion. Coming to this Coin- MUHIW as a young woman she endeared herself to many, not only in the Community but in outlying districts, the Church and espe- cially the home. where her family rise up and call her blessed. The late Mrs. Matheson was a valued member of the Glasgow Road Presbyterian Church.
