Anecdotes of Doctors.

Many anecdotes are related of Dr. Messenger Monsey, who, in the latter part of his life, became, through the influence of Lord Godolphin, physician to Chelsea Hospital. He was greatly esteemed by Walpole, and zealously patronized by Lord Chesterfield for his medical skill. He was the friend of Garrick, but this friendship had rather ao abrupt termination. “Garrick is about to quit the stage,” said the then Bishop of Soder and Man. “That he'll never do,” answered Monsey, making use of a Norfolk proverb, “so long as he knows a guinea in cross on one side, and pile on the other.” The speech was never forgiven. Monsey died in his rooms at Chelsea.

Dr. Paris, talking to James Smith of the folly of people prescribing for them selves, quoted a fable of Camerarius :— “An ass laden with salt was crossing a brook. ‘The water diluted the salt and lightened the burden. He communicated his discovery to a brother donkey laden with wool. The latter tried the same experiment, and found his load double its weight.” A lady,whose fondness for generous living had given ber a flushed face and carbunecled nose, con- suited Dr. Cheyne. Upon surveying herself in the glass, she exclaimed, “Where in the name of wonder did J get such a nose as this ?’ “Out of the decanter, madam, out of the decante ;,” dryly replied the doctor.

Our local celebrity Akenside, th.ough much admired and esteemed for his writings, was deemed haughty and ostentatious by the faculty. His manner exposed him to much rudenes and oue day when be argued that ‘physicians were wiser and better than the world ordinarily thought, was re plied to as follows: **Doctor, after al). you have said, my opinion is that the ancients endeavored to make a science of medi- eine and failed ; the moderns to make it a trade and succeeded.” Oliver Gold- smith ouly practised medicine at inter- vals, and made his visits tohis patients with great ceremony. He soon tired of the duties and restraints of his profes- sion, and at length, on prescribing for a lady of his acquaintanee, a Mrs. Side- botham, a warm dispute arose between Goldsmith and the apothecary as to the dose of mediciae to be administered. The M. D. stood up for his degree, and resented thejinterference of the com- pounder of drugs, with whom Mrs. Sidebotham agreed, when Goldsmith founced out of the heuse in a violent passion. “I am determined hence forth,” said he to Topham Beauclere, ‘to leave off prescribing for my friends.’ *‘Do so, my dear doctor,” was the reply, whenever you undertake to kill let it beonly you enemies.” Thus ended Goldsmith’s medical career.
