Sir R. Ball, who is fond of revealing the marvelous, has been studying the mysterious action of molecules, and what he has to say concerning the movements of the molecules of a diamond is as truly surprising as any- thing he has told ua about the sun and the planets. Every body is composed of a multitude of extremely, but not infinitely, small molecules, and it might be thonght, says Sir Robert, according to « contributor in the Newcastle (England) Chronicle, that in a solid, at all events, the little particles must be clustered together in a compact mass. But the truth is far more wonder- ful. Were the sensibility of our eyes in- creased so as to make them a few million times more powerfal, it would be seen that the diamond atoms which form the perf.ct gem when aggregated in safficient myriads are each in s condition of rapid movement of the most complex descrip- tion. Each molecule would be seen swing- ing toand fro with the utmost violence among the neighboring molecules, and quivering from the shocks it receives from encounters with other molecules, which occur millions of times in each secozd. The hardness and impenetrabilij: so characteristic would at first sight stim, to refute the supposition that it is 2) more than a cluster of rapidly moving pacticies; but the well-known impenetrability of the gem arises from the fact that, when at tempt is made to press a steel point into the stone, it faila because the rapidly mov- ing molecules of the stone butter the metal with snch extraordinary vehemenoes that they refuse to allow it to penetrate or even to mark the crystallized surface. When glass is cut with a diamond the edge which seems 80 hard is really composed of rapidly moving atoms. The glass which is cut is also merely a masa of moving molecules, and what seems to happen is that as the diamond is pressed forward its several par- ticles, by their superior vigor, drive the little particles of glass out of the way.
Stalactite Caves in Utah,
Two of the most wonderfy) stalactite eaves of the world are located within the territory of Utah—one five miles south of Toqueryille and the other 25 miles west of St. George. Neither is remarkable on ac- count of size, and, according to the St. Louis Republic, the dignifying title of ‘* cavern ” has never been bestowed upon either of the two. They simply come with- in the vategory of the wonderful because ef the immense number of stalactites of Yarious tizes and colors which depend from their roofs. A new disease has attacked the pine for- ests of acertain locality in Alsace, and from Strasbourg corses the information that the pine forests of Grendelbrnch, a village situated at the foot of the famous eastie ¢ Guirbaden, have been entirely destroyed. Noremedy has so far been dis- covered to stay the destructive malady. At first it was shought to eut off the dis- eased branches would stop the ravagea, but this has been fennd insufficient, be- cause it does not show itseif until the branchea are hopelessly diseased. The forests of Grendelbruch have been visited by a number of prominent scientists from France and Germany, and Professor Schwa of Ebersfeld, is now examining disea::2%vranches, but so far without re-

Shorthand Practiced by the Momans About 2,000 Years Ago.
Cloero is said to have been the inventor of shorthand writing, and the Freedman, Marcus Tullius Tiro, his friend, the first stenographer, and he undoubtedly did use a method of shorthand writing as early as 60 B.C. The first English treatise was by Timothe Bright, entitled, ‘‘An Arte of Shorte Swifte and Secrete Writing by Characture, Inuented by Timothe Bright, Doctor of Phisike, Imprinted at London bv lL. Windet, #he assignee of Tim Bright, 1583. Cum, prinilegie Regiae Maiestatis. Forbidding all others to print the same.” Dr. Bright in this work says: ‘‘Cicero did account jf worthie his labour, and no less profitable w the Roman common weale (Mest Gracious Soueraigihe) to inuent a »;eedie kinde of wryting by character, as Platarch reporteth in the life of Cato the younger. This invention was increased afterward by Seneca that the nomber of characters grue to7,000. Quenec, June 3.—There has been con- siderable discussion in this city, both among the medical fraternity and private citizens, with regard to the numerous un- disputed cures from various diseases of the kidneys through the use of Dodd’s Kidney Pills. The matter has been not only discussed privately among the friends and acquaintances of those who have re- ceived benefits from the use of the remedy named, but has been chronicled in public press, The general consensus ‘of opinion is that the medicine has undrgone a thorough test and has proved itself fully deserving of the great praise which has been bestowed upon it.
Active Car Buitpixe.—The total out- put of new cars during the past five months is estimated by the Railroad Gazette to have exceeded that of the entire year 1894 by 5,000. The total num-— ber contracted for is 23,030; these figures are for freight cars only. The passenger cars ordered amount to 72, with contracts for 13 more to Le given out shortly. This represents an in— vestment of over $1,000,000. The decrease in the cost of cars to the railroad com- panies has been very considerable in the last few years.

Cotumara, 8. €., May 24.—Juadge Mc- Ellaney shot and killed Charles Brad-haw, white, to-day at Fort Mill. During the morning Bradshaw had been ou trial for a petty offence before Judge McEllaney. He was found guilty and fined. He swore at the judge and threatened to shoot him. Judge McEllaney left the courtroom to get arifle. Bradshaw appeared before the courthouse Jater in the day and opened fire on the judge with a revolver, shooting
at him four times. The judge returned the fire with his rifle. —_——oteo Build up.

During a bull fight at Barcelona the bull jumped clean over the barrier eaclosing the ring, the paseage behind it and a second barrier dividing the passage from the auditorium. A policeman shot the animal, but the bullet, passing through the steer, aleo killed an officer who came to the assistance of the marksman. Nearly sixty persons were hurt during the scramble, but when it was over the “ enter- tainment” proceeded as if nothing had hap- pened.

The rate of assessment on Real Estate for general Civic purposes under said Statute, for the year commencing the first day of Jan- uary, A D 189%, and ending the thirty-first day of December, A D 1895, is hereby specified and fixed at the rate of one per cent on every dol- lar of the value of Real Estate, as assessed by the Assessors of the said City of Chariotte- town in the General Assessment Book and Valuation Roll of all Real Estate and Person- al Property liable to taxation in said City, and of all persons liable to pay Poll Tax therein, made and duly returned by them on the eighth day of April, A D 1895,
