While Douglas appreciates the challenging stance, he says the relationship got tar- nished. “When you chal- lenge someone it puts them in a difficult spot, and they have to make their decision on which route they’re going to go.”

This year Douglas intends to maintain a close work relationship Editor-in-Chief, Lucas McInnis, via an open- door policy.

“T want to create the amica- ble relationship, but still feel as though they [reporters] have freedom . I want them to know they have my sup- port 100 per cent to make this paper as strong as I know it can be.”

CHANGE?

So, Douglas. What makes you think you can change the face of the student union? How are you going to dismantle the notion the SU is a tightly-knit clique?

“The way I bring change is by bringing a lot of energy and passion, and throwing myself in there, almost unknowingly, but wanting to the job. I felt I had the dedi- cation, and I have the drive and desire to do it reason- ably well,” he said, while looking me in the eye for the first time during the whole interview.

Douglas spent the months of May and June researching the constitution, and the rules of order for council.

“People say try as hard as you want but it will never change. The misperception is UPEI students are apathet-

ic. I’ve talked to them. I know they’re not apathetic. They just need some sort of vehicle to push their ideas and push for a they want to do.”

Well, cam- pus societies, get in touch now, because he wants to strengthen the ties between you and the stu- dent union, including helping you plan events and gain a stronger pres- ence on cam- pus. Under legal age and © living in resi-

something to do, including providing entertainment that doesn’t require I.D. “I want to make sure students feel proud to be a UPEI _ stu- dent. I want them to know the SU sup- ports their initiatives,” he said.

the student union this year is to get the students engaged, he said.

“In a nutshell, we want to push the election, push the referendum questions so that students know what’s going on, and push for more than a 19 per cent voter turnout.”

He also wants councilors to report to the student base regularly.

Oh, and he wants you to run in the next election, with his full support and encour- agement.

How’s that for change?
