A. Yes, I have glanced over it.

Q. Do you see any cause for alarm in the public mind in the figures as given therein from the Government banking returns?

A. At the first glance they are startling, when we eee such an expansion of com- mercial discounts as sixty millions in two years and twenty millions loaned on stocks and the like, which is also a great increase | over two years ago; but when we} come to analyze these returns, and espe- cially those referring to commerce, they appear in a different light. In my judg- ment the expansion of loans is fully war- ranted by the great progress the country is making through the rapid development of its mangfacturing industries, the exten- sion of its railways, and its increasing commerce. As a matter of fact, people have little idea of the immense amount of money that is being empleyed in getting supplies from: all quarters for building the Canada Pacific railway alone.

At the present moment nothing seems less likely than a general Grit victory in the contest going on. The iadications are that the National Policy wiil triumph in every Province of the Dominion.
