McDonald of Cape Batteau, Sbipegan Isiand, is in town this week, and is showing a stool of four stocks grown from one oat seed, One of these stocks contains 124 oats, and the other three hold about 300, or about 500 grains inall. Suovutp pe More Carervut.—Mr Charles Parker, of Tilsonburg, Ont.,was pre- puriog a banquet of white bread and bui- ter, with a seasoning of strychnine, for the rats which infest bis house. He was called into another room, and left the feast oa the kitchen table. His son, & baby boy just able to walk, had watched the preparation and in his father’s ab-~ sence piled into the bread. Fortunately hie father returned immediately, caught the child with bis mouth full of poison, and burried him off to a docter. An emetic and a stomach pump eaved its life, but when the father returned home he found that the boy’s pet cocker spaniel had followrd his waster’s example, and was stiffened ovt under the table. It is eafe to say that Mr Parker will! not ‘butter bread with strychnine in the kitchen again.

Christians in Crete.
Canea, Oct. 10.—The French, Italian and Russian governments have complied with the request of the admirals to send reinforcements to Canea, France sending 800 men, with two heavy guns. This action is taken without waiting for the reply of the Porte tothe note of the powers.
The Council of Foreign Admirals has taken the necessary measures to insure the enforcement of the terms of the note pre- seoted 10 the Porte by the representatives of the powers demanding the immediate evacuation of Crete. The presentation of the note and the action of the admirals have caused great rejoicing among the Christian population.
Ismail Bey, Civil Governor of the i iand of Crete, informed tte Mussulman notab’es that the Sultan will withdraw the Turkish troops from Crete in accordance with the demands of the powera.

In the hospitals of the army were 6,049,- 648; of these 425,270 were disabled by wounds, accidents, etc, and 38,115 died cf thew. The total deaths in bo-pital were 186,216; total deathe during the war 304, 369; deaths from fevers 43,715;from diar- rhea and dysentery 44558. The average death per 1000 men per aanum was 108 9.
If these figures of death by disease seem shocking by reason of the numbers in- volved, how mach more so might they haye been had the same proporiion of fatalities occurred as in the iste war with Spain. Here, according to the official record, the number who were killed in battle or died of wounds was 316, while 2225 died of disease.
In the civil ar out of every 100 deaths 64 were from disease, and the other 36 were killed or died of wounds. In the late Spanieh war out ofeach 100 who died 87 died of d ses e aud only 13 were killed or died of wounda.
