PROSECUTION against the London Masonic and Ottawa Orange lotteries began on the 5th. Clarke, of the Orange Sentinel was put on trial on five different charges for advertising lot- teries. Counsel for defence held that Clarke was not the publisher of the Sentinel and not responsible. The magistrate imposed a fine of twenty dollars and costs on each charge.

A LarGE and influential meeting of the lead- ing educationists and publishers was held in Montreal, on the 15th, Prinejpal Dawson in thechair. J. T. Bulmer addressed the meet- ing. After speeches from Prof. Dawson, Mc- Vicar, Murray, Dawson (bookseller), Richard, White of the Gazette, and others, Mr. White moved, and Mr. Dawson seconded a mation that al! books not published in Canada should be imported free. YESTERDAY at noon, the chimney of a House on the corner of Pownal and Richmond streets occupied by Mr. Darrach, took fire. The fire bell rang, several church congregations were broken up, and the engines repaired to the scene. The tire however was not serious, it broke out on the roof but was promptly ex- tinguished by the firemen without the help of the engines. On going to the fire an old hose reelof the ‘‘Silsby” engine upset on turning into Queen street, and was broken.

Burxep To Dearn.-—A northern corres- pondent sends us the following : The house at New Richmond, P. Q., occupied by Mr. John W. McWhirter, was destroyed by fire on Monday night, 5th inst., Mrs. WeWhirter and her infant daughter, perishing in the flames. Her father-in-law, an old man, managed to escape with two of the children, They walked some distance to the next house, but after arriving there, the old man sank and died from exhaustion. A brother of Mrs. McWhirter was badly burned in an unsuccess- ful attempt to save his sister. —St. John Sun

iv is with much regret we learn of the death of Alexander Stewart, Murray Harbor Road. He came to this Island in 1840, and died on Friday, the 9th inst., aged 67 years. He was a man of great integrity, honest and open in all his dealings, a consistent friend and a generous opponent. He was buried on Monday, the llth inst., when his remains were followed to the grave by a large concourse of people, showing the high esteem in which he was held by the whole community. His friends and relations in that part of the country are many, and we extend to them our deepest sympathy.

At 11.20 the Grand Jury returned to Court and announced through their foreman that they found a true bill against William Hughes for murder.

Solicitor General Ritchie moved that the prisoner be arraigned. When brought into Court Hughes looked quite unconcerned, though, when the clerk read over to him the indictment, he seemed to struggle mentally az if to compresend the meaning of the legal verbiage that enshronded the

charge. When asked, however, whether he was guilty or not guilty, the reply came clear, ‘* IT am guilty.”

The steamer Hudson, burned at New York, is valued at $25,000 and her cargo of cotton, eic,, at $125,000. Considerable of her cargo is being removed and her lower decks and hold flooded with water. Most of her cargo will be ruine’, but it is believed the vessel will be saved.

The Norwegian barque Azoy, from Pernam- bueo, Brazil, and the Norwegian barquentine Freideg, from Maceio, Brazil, both with cargoes of sugar, arrived at Halifax, on the 14th. The former has a cargo for the Canada Sugar Refinery, and the laiter for the Nova Seotia Refinery.
