Distribution: Widespread nesting across North America from tree-line in Canada and south across U.S.A. from California to N. Alabama & Georgia. Winters variously across U.S.A.; irregularly to Panama; casual to W. Indies & S. America.

Nest: Made of twigs, dry grasses, weed stalks, mosses, lichens, pine needles, wool; may rob from other nests; in the fork or on horizontal limb up to 15 m (50 ft.) in deciduous or coniferous trees and shrubs. Inhabit orchard or shade trees; open stands of scattered trees, and also

swamps. Eggs: 3 to 6; pale grey or blue-gray, marked with black spots or small dots. Diet: Various foods including fruit, flower petals and blossoms from apple & maple trees,

many insects in summer - beetles, weevils, ants, cankerworms, etc.; berries in mid- summer through winter.

Song: High pitched lisping sound, especially as they feed together in large groups; also a high thin ’zeee' which may sound trilled. Size: 17 to 20 cm (6.5 to 8 inches).

ATLANTIC DRAGONFLY INVENTORY PROJECT COMES TO P.E.l. by Robert Harding

The Atlantic Dragonfly Inventory Project (A01?) is an informal organization dedicated to encouraging and organizing the study of the dragonflies and damselflies (order Odonata) in Atlantic Canada and the New England states, as well as eastern Quebec. The distribution of dragonflies and damselflies is not well known in Atlantic Canada as there are sparse collection records in the region. ADlP was begun in order to contribute to a stronger body of knowledge about the order in this region.

ADlP works in harmony with the efforts of the Dragonfly Society of the Americas (DSA), Acadian Entomological Society (AES) and the Entomological Society of Canada (ESC). Membership is open to all interested persons, and advice on sampling and records-keeping procedures is available from senior enthusiasts. Information discovered by participants is confirmed, entered into a computer database, and made available to all interested parties.
