It didn't, Jake but a minute to find out that llie couldn't. The Green Meadows ,were green in name only. The Old lPasture was brown. There were no leaves on the bushes. It looked ,iiare and dreary. The dear Old lBrlar-patch was bare oi leaves too. This gave Peter and lvlrs. Peter an uncomfortable feeling. Under the tangled brlars and brambles they were as sale as lever but they could be more easily lseen from outside. This gave them a less safe feeling although they ‘knew there was no real reason to ' feel so. l "There's Roddy Fox." said IPeter. looking over to the Old Pas- ‘ ture.

South's bidding in this deal was (to put it kindly) not good! l-Ils first choice was correct, but his re- bids were badly chosen. His first tebld. over hi; partner's Spade r9. spouse, should have been two clubs, not one notrump and while this error would have been immaterial ii’ South had later acted more log- ically, it was probably his own consciousness that he had under- lllCl on the second round which inspired his inexcusable over-hid, four notrump. on the next round.

Observe the problem raised by South's bidding! If North res- ponded properly over one notrump. he was bound to land in at least four notrump; if he bid improperly and said only two spades over one notrump, South would undoubtedly think that North was "signing off" and the partnership would prob- ably fail to reach game! In short, North could lose the game by fail- ing to reach lt, or he could lose it by getting too high!

The simple fcct. is that since South bid only one notrump over one spade. he barred himself for all practical purposes from taking really aggressive action over any subsequent bid that North chose to make.

North realized that something had gone wrong somewhere, and instead of putting his own neck further in the noose by answering the four notrump he promptly passed. It was too late, however, South soon found that he could not make (our notrump against West's club lead even though the heart. suit broke very well and the dia- mond finesse succeeded.

"Who else is there for him to be hunting out there on the Mead- ows? He certainly isn't hunting for you. The grass is too short for any one as big as a Rabbit to hide in. There are no Grasshoppers or Crickets now, so who else would he be hunting for out there? 0f course he is looking for us." re- iorted Danny.

"But as long as you are in here he can't catch you, so why worry?" replied Peter.

"I'm not worrying for myself. but we have friends scattered all over the meadows. I'm worrying about them." declared the Mouse with the short tail.

"I guess they know he ls about and are keeping out of sight. He hasirt caught. any one yet." said Peter.

"That's good. I hope he doesn't catch any." squeaked Danny. Be- ing too small. too low down to see over the grass and watch Reddy as Peter could, Danny went to an- other part of the dear Old Brier- patch to Join Nanny Meadow Mouse.

For a long time Peter watched Ready, and in all that time Reddy caught no one, got nothing to eat. Back and forth, this way and that he hunted. He covered a lot of ground. V“That is really work.” thought Peter as he watched. "Yes sir Reddy is really working and he hasn't caught a single Mouse He hasn't had a bite to eat. I'm glad I don't have to work like that to find my food. and I'm glad I don‘t have to go hungry for long at a time. Ho!"

Reddy had Just made a quick lump as it trying to pounce on something or some one in the grass l-lt- didn't catch any one for he didn't pick up anybody but went right. on hunting in his clever, crafty way. Soon Peter saw him pounce again and not get any- thing.

"I'm glad we don't. have to work like that for our food and have to go hungry until we can find and catch something. We can always get something ivlthout having to look too fur or too long." Salr Mrs. Peter;

Sure enough, there was Short- car, who often hunts ln‘the day- time. He was flying low just s little above the grass. Roddy Fox urns standing still watching Short- enr flying this wny, then that way, so that there was little oi the Green Meadow he would not cover with those keen eyes of his. Roddy turned and clisgustedly trotted off toward the Green Forest. It was useless for him to kecp on hunt- ing where that Owl was hunting, too.
