Hugh Allan, became at Otiawa parties to a new arrangement, by which the following | points are conceded :

First—The Act of 1877, by which the | Pictou Branch is authorized to be trans- ferred, is to be repealed, in order to prepare the way for a new and more carefully guarded statute.

Second—The Pictou branch is to be held | by the Dominion Government until the railway to the Strait of Canso and the steam the

ferred on the following terms : Ai—That the two lines, including the

M. H. de Villemessant, one of the pro- prietors of the Figaro, has addressed the following letter of condolence to the Prince of Wales on behalf of himself and all mem- bers of the staff of that journal on the ocea- sion of the death of the Princess Alice: Sir,—Pray permit me, in my own name, as well as in that of the entire staff of the Figaro, to add our proof of respectful and sympathetic condolence to those which have been addressed to your Royal Highness from all parts on the occasion of the terrible misfortune which has befallen yourself and your august family. The Figaro believes itself privileged to address to you, sir, the sorrowful feelings it has experienced, which this sad event has awakened, inasmuch as it counts among its most honourable and precious memories the visit with which the heir to the Crown of England so courteous- ly condescended to favour it. The Figaro hopes that this distinetion permits it re- spectfully to take part in all your sorrows, as it would wish to rejoice in your happi- ness and prosperity. We implore God to preserve for long to come from fresh monrn- ing the Royal Family of England, so loved and yenerated abroad as at home. Your | Royal Highness will not doubt that these wishes are shared by all Frenchmen who, like the Figaro, have preserved intact the worship of Monarchy and the love of Prin- cesses. Be pleased to accept, sir, the ex- pression of respect with which I have the iionour to be, your Royal Highness’s humble servant.

There is no accounting for taste in music. When the King of -the Sandwich Islands was entertamed at a concert, he was asked what imstrament he preferred. His Majesty

When Johuny was questioned as to why his engagement with Miss H. had been broken oif, he rolled his eyes, looked very much pained, and groaned, ‘“‘Oh! she turned out a deceiver.” But he forgot to mention that he was the deceiver whom she had turned ont.

She figured it up : ‘f Two cans of oysters at 20 cents—40 cents, that is 150 oysters ; milk, butter and sundries, $1.50; that. is 150 stews, at 25 cents, will be $40; net profit, over $35.” Then she smiled sweetly, and the oysterman knew that she was the refreshment committee of a church festival.

A bit of social scandal is going the rounds of Ottawa, in which an English officer who recently came to that city and the daughter of an English nobleman are the principals. It has not as yet, however, been fully con- firmed, {t is known that the young lady, accompanied by a lady companion, visited the city several days age, accompanied by a detective, and that immediately after- wards the officer left for other parts.

The Ottawa Herald is responsible for the following : ‘‘It is currently reported that it is the intention of the Government to brin in a bill next session to amend the Militia Act, the leading provisions of which will abolish the existing district staff system, and provide a simpler machinery for the discharge of those duties now performed by district deputy adjutant-generals, brigade majors and district paymasters.

A French miilionaire, well known in con- nection with M. De Desseps and the Suez Canal, lost at one of the swellest of the gambling clubs in Paris, the other night, 1,740,000 francs to an English sporting baronet. The millionaire, declaring, as is generally believed, that he was swindled, he was at once knocked down by the’ baronet, and the affair has been carried into the courts, Where many interesting exposures may be expected.

A sed case of suicide, through jealousy, teok place near Liverpool on the 29th of last month. ‘The victim was a young girl only seventeen years of age. She was last seen on Sunday night by a young female companion, to whom she said that she would not be at home that night, and that she wished good-bye to her friends. On Mon- day morning a coachman found her hat én the banks of the canal with letters to her friends, giving her address, and the body was subsequently found. It appears that the deceased had kept company with a young man named Desmond, who stated at the inquest that there had been no el between them, although the deceased had deen a little jealous because he had spoken to another girl. He had faiied to meet her on Sunday night, and he did not meet her on the previous Thursday, although he had promised. A girl who wrote the letters for her said she did not suspect anything wrong
