Rowiag and Walking.

Dr. J. W. Ranney gave a lecture the other evening at Chickering Hall, on anatomy and physiology, with special reference to athletic exercises. After giving a description of the human skeleton, of the skin and its various glands and vessels, the doctor address- ed himself to the muscular systcm, which was illustrated, first with histo- logical micrographs, and finally with a general plan of the muscular arrange- ments, projected upon a screen. The most novel part of the lecture was the exhibition upon the screen of tabular statement of the amount of foree re- quired to carry out the yarious physical operations. Premising that a foot per ton is merely a symbol! for the power required to raise one ton a foot high, the relative amounts of power expend- elin vital action, concerned in vital movements, and required for the pro- duction of animal heat for one day are, respectively, 260,300, and 2,840 foot tons. To row one mile at racing speed requires an expense of 18.56 foot tons of muscular energy; to walk one mile, 17.75 foot tons; to walk one mile, carrying @ knapsack weighing 60 pounds, 24.48 foot tons. The force ex-

nded in a day’s work is calculated at trom 250 to 350 foot tons.

Dr. Ranney took occasion, in the course of his lecture, to inveigh very severcly against the mania for walking which is now prevalent, in which young women, without training and without proper preparation, attempt such im-

ssible tasks as walking 3,000 quarter miles in 3,000 consecutive quarters of an hour. Such practices, he said, were not athletic exercises in any proper sense of the term, but downright cruelty, and he hoped the time was not far off when spectacles of this class would cease. Dr. Ranney regards row- ing, when properly pursued, as a finer and more healthful exercise than walking.

Ringing For the Water Boy.

A good story is told of a verdant one who was a passenger in a railroad ex- press train, and became thirsty :

“ Where’s that ’ere boy with the water can?” he inquired of his next neighbor.

“ He has gone forward to the baggage car, I suppose,” was the the reply.

“ Wal, d’yes’ pose I kin get him back here agin?”

“ Certainly,” said the other, “you have only to ring for him,’ and he nodded toward the bell-line that ran above their heads.

No’sooner said than done. Before any one could prevent it, Rustic had seized the line and gave it a tremendous tug.

The consequence was at once obvious ; three shrill whistles were heard, half a dozen brakesmen ran to their posts. and the train came to a stand-still with a suddenness that startled half the passen- gers wich astonishment, and caused every man near a window to hoist it and out to see what was the matter.

In a few minutes the conductor, red and excited came foaming into the car to know who pulled that line.

“‘ Here mister, this way; I’m the man,” shouted the offender, drawing all eyes upon him.

« You!” said the conductor. What did you do it for?’

*« Cos I wanted some water.”

« Wanted some water.”

“ Sartin ; 1 wanted the water boy, and my pardner here in the seat said I’d better ring for him as they do at the hotel, an’ so I yanked the rope. Will he be along soon? an’ by-the-by, what in thunder be you stopping for?”

The shout of langhter that greeted this honest confession was too much for the conductor and he had to wait until he got his train under way before he ex- plained the mysteries of the bell-rope to this verdant customer,—EH xchange.

How Fast Can a Hound Run? ee This interrogation is frequently heard, and always with varying an- swer. A special demonstration of the speed of this species of quadruped re- cently came to our notice, and being well authenticated by several gentle- men who were on the train, we give it as an illustration: —J. A. Ford, of this city, owns a heavy built mastiff bound. Business one day calied him to Ceresco, a small village eight miles distant, and the dog accompanied him. On his re turn he got on board the train, and did not discover the absence of his dog until the train be; n moving, when he stepped to the vack platform of the ear, and there saw that the hound had just started. The dog overtook the train, but as the speed of the cars was constantly quickening, its endeavors to jump on board were fruitless. Then the train began to whizz faster, and the dog quickened his pace, and until within a mile or two of this city, kept up with the cars, which were going at the rate of 18 miles an hour. He arrived in a few minutes after the cars, his feet sore and bleeding from contact with the splinters on the ties, having made the distance of eight miles in half an hour.—Letter to Chicago Inter-Ocean.
