New Process For smelting - copper. Revealed

TORONTO (CP) - Details of a new copper smelling process that reduces costs and supplies a fur- nace-gas by-producetfor making liquid sulphur dioxide and sulphu- ric acid were released Monday by the International Nickel Com- pany of Canada. Limited.

The method. known as the ox- ygen flaah smelting process, has oxygen as a catalyst with copper concentrates. Sulphur com- blues with oxygen and a copper- rich. slag is cleaned by flash smelting pyrrhotlte.

The process was outlined Tues- day in a paper presented at the annual meeting here of the Cana- dian Instltute of Mining and Met- allurgy by C. E. Young of INCO. The process eliminates the need for a fuel such as coal or cake. By-product furnace gas is used to produce liquid sulphur dioxide. Low-cost oxygen for the process is produced by a tonnage oxygen unit known as an oxyton. built for INCO by Canadian Liquid Air Company.

Development of the method has been under way since 1045. Last year. using the by-produced fur- nace gas. Canadian Industries (1054) Limited turned out 70.000 tons of liquid sulphur dioxide and

Highlights Of British Budget

LONDON (Reuters)- Highlights of the.1055-56 British budget pre- sented today:

A purchase tax on textile Piecl goods. towels. sheets and other household articles was out in half to 25 per cent.

The standard rate of income tax was cut by six peace on the pound (Iii per cent). The present rate is nine shillings on the pound (45 per cent) for middle ' after allowances.

Income taxes on lower Incomes were reduced "approximately."

The non-taxable-allowance was increased by about one sixth to allow tingle persons to earn 2140 tax free and married couples 5240.

The income-tax allowance for a child was increased from 5:85 to E100.

Better Way For Preserving Fish

TORONTO (CF) - A new and better way for preserving the flavor and freshness of fish has been developed by CNR research technicians. the railway said in a statement Tuesday.

Freshly caught fish is pre- chilled to a temperature of 29 degrees-just above its freez- lng point. It is then placed in a container where the temper- ature can be maintained for at least I00 hours.

The CNR said there is no loss of juices or delicacy and that It can be shipped from either coast to Winnipeg with- out harm.
